Adoption this Sunday!

We decided to adopt the kitties!  We're adopting three from the same litter--Delilah, Samson and Teddy.  I'm nervous, anxious and excited!  I'll be sure to post pics.

Any thoughts on kitty proofing our house?  What about changing their names?  I want to, but I kind of feel bad doing it....should we?

Re: Adoption this Sunday!

  • Congrats!

Kittens do get into everything, so of course put chemicals in a safe place.  But the surprise for me was my kitten's wanting to mess with cords.  It was ok if they were plugged in, but if they were just out... looks too much like a string/toy, I guess.  So wind those cords :)!

Also, the first place you should show them in their new home is their litter box(es).  Cats are awesome, even as kitten's they'll use 'em, just need to know where they are.

As for names, NMS... I'd probably change them.  Most (although not all) cats don't really know/respond to their names and if these are kittens, IMO, it's nbd to change them.

Anyway, good luck and have fun!

  • Awesome! I'm useless for kitty proofing. My cats always got into everything. I do second the cord thing. Especially the strings from blinds and shoe laces. Kitties love them all.

As for chaning their names, you shouldn't feel bad. They're still kittens, and they haven't really stuck to them yet. Each of my cats has always known their name, and responded when I called it out. The way you say their name is what they recognize. To them, it's like your meow, and your meowing call that is for them. Even if I ask J to pass the salt and pepper, Sgt Pepper comes running in and meowing.

  • So fun! Congrats to you! I have no cat advice.

Re: names, I think their names are cute, but if you want to change them, go for it.

  • Yay for kitties! Herc got into everything. Cords, toilet paper, shoe laces, blinds, his water bowls. If they still have claws put up anything you don't want to get shredded. Put the chemicals up high. I had a hard time teaching Herc to stay off of the counters. Another thing I had to do was play with him before bedtime or he would keep me up all night. He's 2 and he actually still does a lot of this. He also likes to steal things.

If you want to change their names, do it. I only kept Sunny's name because she was already 5 and responded to it. Hercules was named Happy when I got him.

  • Aw, yay! I can't wait for pictures. I didn't know you were looking at three...I must have missed that part!

I like the names, but I definitely wouldn't feel bad about changing. Jackson's name was Peter when I got him and that was my boss's name at the time. I changed it in a second.

As for kitty proofing, it depends on the cat. Cammie didn't get into anything, but Jackson got into everything (still does - he's insane). My biggest suggestion is to make sure closet doors & toilets are closed. The cats have a field day in my closet if I leave it open by mistake.

I'll keep you posted on names.  Jason wants to name them Hammond, Clarkson and May after the Top Gear guys...but I'm trying to veto that!

  • So exciting!  They are going to be so fun to watch.  I'd go ahead and change their names if you don't like them.  Please post pics!

Ok,well I've never really watched TG, so no opinion there; however, I think May sounds great, but maybe I'm Board Bias :)!  Have fun!
