Work Vent

The air conditioner for the entire building is above my desk. I can hear it kick on and off every two minutes like I'm sitting next to it. The lights above me are shaking it's so bad. It's like the auditory equivalent of Chinese water torture. I might flip out.

The building's head of maintenance looked at it this time last year because it was doing the same thing. All he did was shrug and say "it's an old unit, it'll get better as it has a chance to warm up." Ugh. He's coming again at some point, but I doubt he'll be any more inclined or any more able to make changes. At least I'm on record saying that it's bad. I might have to ask my boss if I can work somewhere else for the afternoon.

Re: Work Vent

  • Yeah, I was going to ask if there are any other places where you can sit or permanently relocate. That would annoy me too.

  • How annoying.  I would bring your boss in and let them see just how bad it is and see about sitting somewhere else.

  • My boss was great- he came over checked it out and gave me three alternate places to go to if it gets bad. It's ok today so far. One of my coworkers who sits near me folded up some post-its and wedged it in one of the ceiling tiles and that's taken away about 90% of the noise. So much better, and I have options.

  • One of the ceiling tiles and it took away 90% of the noise?  That's crazy.  I'd talk to maintenance about gettng that tile either replaced or some sort of padding.  Glad you have alternate places you could sit.
