Comparing embroidery/sewing machines

I realize a similar question was asked a few posts down, but I have some specific machines I'm trying to compare and could use some input.

First I found this machine: http://www.amazon.com/Brother-SE400-Computerized-Embroidery-Machine/dp/B003AVMZA4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2AEPWE4CV6MT8&colid=1R7LLIV42G2RA

The price is awesome and all of the reviews are great! My solitary hang up is that it only embroiders a 4"X4" area. I've never embroidered before so I don't have a lot of experience, but I assume this would limit me alot.

Then I found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/360442533867

Obviously, this one costs more, but it can embroider a much larger area AND it already comes with some software, which is a major selling point for me. But the reviews i've been able to find on this machine are much more mixed, compared to the glowing recommendations on the other one.

Sorry this was so long, I just don't want to make this purchase without doing as much research as possible. TIA!!!!!!

Re: Comparing embroidery/sewing machines

  • I have the brother SE-400 and you are right about the 4x4 area being very limited.  I have been using is mostly for quilting so far and I don't have any complaints about it. It is a nice machine.

I am just starting out with embroidery, and most of the cute patterns I see need at least a 5x7 hoop.  Also I just realized that I need the software if I want to use any fonts except for the standard ones that come on the machine.  ( I guess in my mind I only needed the software to do "fancy" stuff.)

  • I have a Futura SES 2000 and you are definitely right in that the 4x4 hoop will be VERY limiting. My machine has a large and a small hoop, but my largest hoop is still not as large as I wish it was. If I had it to do over again, I'd totally get a machine with a bigger hoop b/c it's drives me crazy to see all the super cute designs for toddler t-shirts that are too big for my hoop :(
