Shoulder Surgery Anyone?

I had shoulder stabilization surgery about 3.5 weeks ago. From my "very" basic knowledge, I know they tightened the cuff and a ligament in the front. About 1.5 weeks ago, I was cleared to start physical therapy.

I'm used to being very active. They've OK'D me to do cardio bike exercises, pilates-without any of the arm portions of the class obviously, glute/leg work in addition to the PT. I'm anxious to get back into competing in ballroom dancing though first and foremost.

If you have had shoulder surgery:

 1. How long before you regained a good bit of movement? I'm not asking full range.

2. I'm very good about doing my PT exercises. Any other tips to help with recovery?

Re: Shoulder Surgery Anyone?

  • My shoulder had been subluxing on and off for probably about 10 years before I went to get it checked out. When I was 15 I started doing PT 3 times a week for 3 months then the day before i had to go back to get it checked it subluxed while i was in the pool and I couldn't fix it. They decided to operate and when they operated they found out that I had torn my roator cuff and had the start of brusitis (sp?) The subluxing came from my tendons being too stretched out to fix themselves. I started PT again the monday after my surgery and after a week of PT I had about 50% and by week 2 it was about 75 %. My advice is that even after you are "cleared" and don't have to keep going to PT still do some sort of exercise for your shoulders. Mine have started to sublux again after about 3 years, to the point where I had to quit plaing basketball in college.

Thank you for sharing your story. I don't believe I have as much movement as you did with your therapy so I may ask my PT what I can do to help step things up.

Yes, I completely understand the concept of continuing the exercises and will be doing so for sure.

  • Hi there! I had surgery for a shoulder separation about 6 years ago, so it's not the freshest memory, but I will tell you what I can remember.

I was in a should immobilizer for about 2 months after surgery and then started PT 3 times per week. It was another month before I could really lift my shoulder up to even put my hair in a ponytail. I continued PT but wasn't great about doing the exercises on my own. I was back to work 12 weeks after surgery, so I could move my arm around okay then, and I'd say another 3 months after that I had pretty close to full range.

I really don't have any other tips to help recovery! Best of luck!
