Does the first mile ever get easier?
I've been running for about a year now. I can run for 3-4 miles at a time without too much effort, but the first mile or so kills me every time. I'm winded, it feels like I have bricks in my shoes and then all of a sudden I seem to find my stride and the next 2-3 miles come almost easily, albeit, super slow. Does that first mile ever get easier? I think that my 5K times would be much better if I could just run 4.125 miles and not count the first mile LOL

Re: Does the first mile ever get easier?
no. not really.
when you start exercising it takes your body a few minutes to switch from anaerobic to aerobic respiration.
as far as 5Ks, just warm up with a couple of easy miles before the start.
I've been running for 15 years. the first 5 minutes still blows. sometimes even the first 10. it seems like the older I get the longer it takes to warm up. . . . yeah 30s!

agree w/ the warm up before races. My races have improved after starting to do a warm up before the race.
As for training runs: I usually take the first mile slower than the rest of my run - usually about 45-60 seconds slower than whatever pace i'm planning for the run.
That's what a warm-up is for! I always need a 10-15 minute easy jog followed by a quick stretch before a race.
