After a PCS (BR)

How do you find a babysitter?  There is no base where we are living, otherwise I would utilize the CDC.  I've looked into care.com but there were only a few listings and most were nannies, which I do not need.  We are not religious and don't attend church (my family suggested finding someone at church).  One of H's coworkers volunteered to watch E so we can go to a movie sometime, but that doesn't help if I need someone to watch her during the day.  Before we moved H would take a half day for my appointments but he isn't allowed to take any leave until we PCS again and this school is over.

 Any ideas ladies?

  • Try looking them up on Sittercity and Craigslist. If you can't find a sitter, you can also look into daycares. There are some that allows a "drop in"
  • If you figure it out let me know. I had a friend watch them once, but we never get a break.

  • If I wasn't near a base to use the CDC or an FCC provider, I would look into a local daycare.

  • Have your H asking people with kids in his shop who they use or how they found someone.

A lot of people, not necessarily military, do a nanny/sitter share.  Nanny says I'm available X, Y, Z dates this month and the two families split the available days.

Oooh, I'll look into Sittercity now.  I knew there was another website like care.com, but I couldn't  remember what it was called

Most people didn't bring their families with them since we'll all PCS back to where H was stationed.  I considered staying behind too, but we decided it would just be better to PCS 3 times in 13 months (UGH!) so that we could be with H and he wouldn't miss out on E being a baby.

  • For things that come up during the day we use a DC that has drop in. It isn't a perfect solution because they don't always have room but it's better than nothing. For nights we have a teenager whose the daughter of one of H's coworkers.

Go to the park and strike up a convo with the other moms there and ask for recommendations.

  • Sittercity is free for military families too!

The Airman and Family Readiness Center on our base has a list of people (mostly teen girls) who are CPR and First Aid certified. I think they send out an email with the names, ages, and phone numbers in case anyone needs a sitter. Maybe call and see if they have something similar on your base.

The chaplains daughter does random babysitting for us but we found her simply by word of mouth. Is there any spouses groups on facebook that you could ask?

Craigslist skeeves me out a bit, but I tend to be overly paranoid and cautious so take that how you will...

Off to check sittercity!  We aren't at a base or near one unfortunately.  I don't think H would let me hire someone I found on craigslist.  He threw a hissy about renting a place I found on there lol

Hmmm... anxious/scared/overwhelmed/unprepared.  That about sums it up pretty well. I will just be relieved when she is here.  I'm dying to see if she has red hair.
