Swimming or Zumba?

I'm trying to find another activity to get in another workout during the week. I already do 5 days worth of boot camp for 1 hour. I have an aggressive weight loss goal and am working with a nutritionist/trainer to do this safely. In order to come close to my goal I need to try for 8-9 workouts in a week which means doing something at night in addition to my bootcamp.

I should mention I have my nutrition under control with propor calories, carbs, protein etc but I do have PCOS which makes losing weight more of a challenge.

I've done Zumba twice now this week and while yes, I sweat I felt like it wasn't doing much for me and I couldn't get my heart rate above 130 (I have a monitor to keep track). I also don't get the sore muscles but I think that's because I'm a bit conditioned from bootcamp. I'm willing to stick with it if it'll get me additional results but in your mind what's better.... swimming or zumba?

Re: Swimming or Zumba?

  • I think exercise is a very personal thing where one work out may be great for one person, but may not give the next the same satifsaction/results.

I personally love swimming, its one of my favorite things to do.  However, I find that it really doesn't help me lose weight.  I find that it helps me be physically fit - it improves my lung function, builds lean muscles, and improves stamina but I never lose weight while doing it.

Through trial and error I've found the things that work for me.  Running = losing weight, swimming = feeling fit, Insanity = feeling bulky and exhausted, 30DS = fantastic arms.

  • Ditto PP, it is a very individual thing! For some Zumba is going to work, and for some swimming. I feel as long as you LIKE the activity and are doing it there is no set activity that you MUST do. I think it all about staying active and with the fact that you are doing other serious workouts, a more "fun" activity is what I would do, so I would not burn out. IMO.

  • Why not try something along the lines of endurance instead of just boot camp or Zumba? Long distance running and cycling. I can easily ride my bike 12-15 hours a week if I had the time.
  • A few things about Zumba and swimming.

I took Zumba for about 4 years. I love dancing and loved the energy I was able to release. You need to make your movements bigger and maybe jump more to get your heart rate up. , don't take it anymore because I want to focus on other things. I still do like taking a class with a friend every once in a blue moon. Make those movements bigger and jump more and you will sweat!!

Swimming: Swimming is a WONDERFUL sport! I love it! I'm passionate about it and will probably be swimming until I'm an old lady and can no longer move my joints or think clearly!!! ;) Swimming is very technique oriented and to get a good overall workout it helps if you have good technique. Take some lessons or join a masters team to get better at swimming. Also, your heartrate is much lower in the water, so you have to work hard!!
