DH has arthritis

My DH went to the doctor yesterday so he could get his anxiety medicine Rx renewed. While there, he mentioned to the doctor that he had been having some off and on back pain the last couple of weeks. He actually went to a minor med walk-in clinic and the doctors there told him he must have slept funny and gave him some Lorotabs for the pain.

The doctor yesterday went ahead and did some X-rays...the nurse practitioner was extremely surprised to find that he has arthritis in his back and his back is 30 years older than he is! He's 27.

Needless to say, we are a bit surprised. They told him to just stay active and take aleeve for pain. They gave him a steroid pack to reduce the current inflammation.

Has anyone else dealt with arthritis so young? any suggestions?

Re: DH has arthritis

  • I have osteoarthritis. I started having problems when I was 32. I suggest he see a sports medicine physician for activity recommendations. Strengthening the muscles around the affected area is key for pain control. He can also look into anti-inflammatory diets. There are many ways to deal with the pain other than meds.
  • I have OA in my hip.  I was shocked when I was diagnosed at 35.  Ditto the PP--Staying active and strengthening the area around the affected joint are absolutely the best things for pain control.  If I'm going to run, mountain bike, or do anything else that I know will put a lot of stress on that joint, I will take a Naproxen or some Aleve/Ibuprofen to help with the inflammation.  I have also found my foam roller to be excellent for self-massage and self-adjustments at home, which help greatly with the pain.
  • I was diagnosed at 22! I am aparently really hard on my joints. I will join with PPs and tell you, staying active and building muscle up around my knees have definitely helped. There are still some days when I can't do anything, but overall, I still lead a pretty active life.

  • I've had arthritis since I was in high school and it is no fun when I get flares and can't seem to get out of bed due to the pain, now I'm only 21. My cousin has had fibromyalgia since she was only 13. It happens at a young age to some people. At least he had a few more years.
