After 3 years it still boggles my mind...

...that I love running so much even though I am so bad at it! Lol.  Seriously.  On my best days I run about a 12 minute pace, I am pretty sure my form is all wrong, I suck at running hills (99.9% of the time I walk them) and I have come in dead last in a race.

But the feeling it gives me after I am done makes it all worth it :)  And lining up at the start of a race with 1,000's of other runners makes me so happy and like I am a part of something, no matter how bad I am at it!

Re: After 3 years it still boggles my mind...

  • I have not been running as long as you but I completely agree! I am by no means FAST and I have to take walking breaks..... BUT I still love going out there!

  • This is a great post!  I read about runners who race regularly and talk about junk miles or working on form, etc., and I just feel like, you know what, at least I am out there running and doing it and loving it!  I am not doing it to perfect my form or BQ or even to be super fast, I am doing it because I like it!

  • I'm also not that fast (compared to most) but I love the feeling after completing a race and obtaining my PR. Who cares if it isn't as fast as the girl in front. It was my Personal best and I get so proud knowing where I started and where I am now!

Even if we are slow, we are faster than the ones on the couch! Haha

  • I've always been so slow.  A guy at my gym told me once that I looked like a runner, like I was built for speed - I think he was trying to hit on me.  I had all I could do not to laugh.

I actually think I have pretty good form.  My legs just aren't capable of going any faster.

My track coach in high school told me once that he wouldn't let me run any longer distance races because he didn't have a calendar to time me with.

He was a jerk and I wanted to cry when he said it, but now I can laugh about it (if I overlook the part about him being a high school coach), because it's so true.

  • :: raises hand:: Slow runner here too!

I bought a Bondi Band this week that says "Not fast but not last"!

Hahaha, I LOVE that!!  They have some good ones...one of my very favorites is "This IS my race pace!". Lol!

  • I haven't been running too long. I think I'm actually okay at it - good form, etc. (though, compared to ladies on this board, I am sloooooow.) I like your attitude! I do (usually) feel really good when I'm done with a run (occasionally I feel good during the run, too!)

YES!!  For sure :)  And we sometimes get the loudest cheers!! ;)

  • I'm also slow, & okay with that. :-) I'm proud of myself for doing something that's challenging & good for me. Running (even slowly) makes me feel bada**.

I also sometimes walk for a minute or two about half way through my long runs. I'm pretty sure "serious" runners would not consider me a true runner, but I'm not losing any sleep over it! ;-)

There is video that shows that at the end of the Tinkerbell 1/2 the two LAST place finishers got Mickey & Minnie to run across the line with them! It actually made me wish I was last! lol.

    That is awesome!!

I ran a 5k race once where the men went first and then the women.  About 45 minutes after the men started they asked all of us women to start lining up.  All of a sudden we hear the announcer yelling for us to move over and make room for the last man coming through.  We all look over and there is a man who must have been 400 pounds running his heart out and obviously having a hard time.  I have NEVER heard so many people screaming and clapping for this one man.  It gave me chills and brought tears to me eyes.  Runners are awesome!! :)

  • I'm on my bike rather than running, but I'm slow too.  I must look like I'm about to expire at any moment, because I frequently have strangers roll down their car windows and randomly cheer me on.  Doesn't happen to DH or our friends, but it does make me smile.

Too funny!!  I am sure the sounds I make and the look on my face scares many people when I run ;)

Yeah, it's funny.  I won't get there first, but I'll get there eventually.  My favorite cycling socks have snails on them.

  • Glad to know I'm not the only one.  HELLOOOOO fellow slow runners!  :)

I try to run with H sometimes, but he's 13" taller than me and I end up exhausted, sore, and feeling bad about myself.  Not. Worth. It.

It was actually one of my very favorite races, too :)  I don't mind, someone has to be last!!

  • I run at a 12min pace, and fret about how slow that seems to be. It is scary when I am running a race only because I am worried about being last, but in a sense I don't really care either. I am running a half marathon this weekend (its my third in a yr), and I will just be glad to finish and shave some time off the other two I ran. I love running and how it makes me feel afterwards. Its also my "me time" from my kids and graduate school and whatever else is going on. I am going to work on improving my pace this spring (either a coach, trainer or something). Good luck to you.

All of this. Especially the first part. I will never, ever come close to winning a race, but I sure as heck give it all I have once I am out there. Besting a PR is a win to me!

  • Great post!  I need to keep reminding myself that I am doing something I never thought I would enjoy so who cares what the time is.  I am running next weekend with my brother and sister in law in a relay race.  I know we are going to come in last but to see him cross that finish line will be a great moment!!  Thanks for the post!!!
  • Thanks so much for this post! I am soo hard on myself that I can't run a whole 5k. I am still running intervals and that frustrates me. I need to take all of these positive comments to heart!
  • i love this post, thanks for the inspiration ladies!!! i am running my first race in a few weeks and i am also soooo slow, doing about 13 min miles right now. i am just concentrating on finishing. i might possibly be last, lol. oh well!
