Moms...a couple questions

Hey girls!

I lurk all the time now, but rarely get a chance to post...and when I do, I feel like I'm always just asking for help or advice. Sorry about that!:(

I'm wondering when you got your first period post-baby? I'm still EBFing and my doctor said maybe I'd get it when she's about 6 months. Just wondering what you guys experienced. Also, was it pretty irregular at first?

Another question (this is kind of broad)...Sometimes I have pain in my lower abdomen since having Audrey. I don't know if this is because I had a c-section or if it's normal, or what? It's not a stabbing pain, but it's quite strong sometimes and usually more intense in the middle of the night. It's not all the time though...just at random.

I'm going to my obgyn in a couple weeks and of course I'll ask these questions there, but I just wanted to see if you guys could weigh in on any of them!

Thanks!!

Re: Moms...a couple questions

  • I got my period literally on the same day of my LMP before I got pregnant so in total I didn't have it for 1 year. I BF'd but not exclusively. I am probably the minority but I was glad to have it back. We were cautious but we really really don't want 2 that close together. It came right back as if it had never left. Same length, same strength and same length in between.

I can't help you with the second portion but I think you should call the doc and see if they say it's even ok to wait the 2 weeks?!

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Thanks Tonia!

I know...I thought of calling the dr. sooner. I guess I just didn't think much of it since it's not happening all the time, but maybe it's not that normal? I just figured it was something post-baby related.

  • I EBF and haven't gotten a period yet. My OB said that it won't likely return until he's relying more on solids in his diet, or when we start weaning. BUT it could also show up at anytime. I'm hoping it stays away as long as possible! It's a year this week since I last had a period and I'll perfectly ok with it if I don't get once until I wean Charlie.

  • I EBF'd and I didn't get my period until after I stopped, so I went for a good 18 months without it... it was a sad day when it returned  It didn't take me long to get back on a regular cycle, but then again I was pretty regular to begin with.

As I always say, a call to the doctor can never hurt...

  • I got my period around 6 months, and it was a little longer and pretty light.  It definitely was not like before.  Then it was another few months, I think, mid February, that I got it again.  This time it was really heavy for a day and a half and the last couple days was really light... so light, I could use a panty-liner.  It depends on the person, obviously.  I was EBFing up until we started solids around 5 months, so I guess that's what triggered it. But I would say it's irregular at this point.

I don't know what to tell you about abdominal pain.  I had a c/s, too but I never had any problems. Is the pain at your scar? The only thing I can think of is maybe you're body starting back on its cycle, and you could be "cramping"? I really have no clue!

  • Like Tonya I got mine nearly exactly one year after my LMP.  Alex was right around three months but we were also supplementing with formula on and off during that tine.  I got it the night before i was to return to work :/ Mine was a lot heavier to begin with but didnt last as long, only 3 days on avwrage as opposed to 5 medium to light days.  My cycle is a bit longer now than before.  I had a solid 28 day cycle before and now I average around 32.

As for the abdominal pain, I remember having some randomness for months after.  Sometimes tingling, sometimes crampy, sometimes pulling/stretching or general achiness.  Usually right around my scar but once things settled and healed more it has gone away.  It still feels weird sometimes when I do crunches.

  • I EBF'd (until introducing solids, in which it was BF/puree diet). I got my first period about two days after I completely stopped BFing, which was when Newt turned 1...so whats that like, 19mos after my last period? It is completely inconsistent, still. I'm already 5 days late, last month I was two days, the month before that 8 days early...but part of my problem is probably stress related.

As for the pain, I have pain that I'm sure is directly related to my c-sec even still. Sometimes its just a dull soreness like I worked out too much, other times its much more like stabbing or prickley right around my scar. It has definitely decreased (the first few months were more often and seemed to encompass A a greater area, then slowly the pain became less frequent and seemed to decrease in area to now being just surrounding my scar). I have heard that people who were more tone in their abdomen before pregnancy actually have a more difficult recovery, but I don't know how true that is. It's also fairly common for you to get little twinges of pain every now and then even years later, due to damaged/severed pain receptors and nerves from surgery.  That all being said, its still worth a discussion with your doc if you're concerned.

  • I didn't get my first post-partum period until after I quit BFing, around 10 months.

I don't really have any advice about the pains, I would guess maybe that's c-section related.

  • I still don't have it. We EBF'd and he's on all table foods now, but he is still nursing about 3 to 4 times a day.

I get random stuff around my abdomen too. Mostly weird stabby pains that feel like gas pains, phantom baby kicks (probably gas again) and stretching.

  • Thanks girls!!

For those who asked...the pain isn't around my scar (although the incision area does still bother me). The pain is definitely internal. It's kind of a relief to hear that a couple of other c-section moms have had similar pain...but of course I'll still be calling my doctor to follow up:)

Ishould clarify that mine wasn't always just around the scar much like

Becca it reduced in area over time eventually limited to just around my scar and now mostly just by the right corner of the scar.  Like you said, definitely discuss it with your doc to be safe.

ETA: I also continued  to breast feed Alex up to 11onths at which point he weaned himself even though I had gotten my period back when he was three months old.

    This-

I still havent had one- I quit breastfeeding at 7 mos and still nothing.

  • My dumb period started before I stopped and made my supply tank.  It was weird.

I had a random pain on the middle side of my stomach for many months after I had Weston (I didn't have a c-section).  It was mostly when I was laying down, mostly on my side.  It eventually went away.

  • No period yet for me and Olive is 6 1/2 months. I havent dropped her night feeding/pumping either so I dont know if that will make a difference. I've read that once that happens, your period is more likely to come back. I doubt that's true for everyone.
