I am clueless about how much movers cost. Has anyone recently gotten a quote or use them? What was the quote? How much square footage/rooms were moved?
We have 3 bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen and finished basement which includes a toy area and a living area. Total sq ft is 1433 plus the basement.
Re: Cost for movers
DH's company moved us 5 hours away within Texas...our house was 1535 SF, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, lots of stuff in the garage. The cost with the movers packing us was $3700. (The packing part was $1k). This was through Allied.
To have our stuff already packed, moved locally on a city truck and the packed stuff which is in storage, picked up and moved down the street (less than a mile) to our new house will cost us $600-$800 is the current estimate.
This varies a ton, even within the same city. We got a few quotes, and they were vastly different. We are paying $120 an hour + gas for 3 movers and a truck for a local move. They do not charge for travel time. We're anticipating the total to be about $600 for a 1500 sq ft house with no basement. It's actually a 2 part move since some of our things are going into temp housing and the rest into storage.
Everyone I spoke to charged by the hour for local moves, so it really depends on how much stuff they're moving. They will also pack, unpack, and assemble/disassemble furniture for the same rate, it could get as expensive as you let it. We plan to have as much done as possible before they get there so that they can just load, transport, and unload our belongings.
The cost for the packing the truck, driving, and unpacking the truck was about 1.5K (local move), The costs of packing was about 2K. Our old place was 1000 SQFT and our new place is 1500 SQFT. They packed absolutely everything except one suitcase. The more you pack the less they charge. They more or less bill on time and materials (boxes, tape, paper). Kitchens take a long time and materials . Clothing, toys and books do not.
The estimates are free so I'd just jump in and see what they say.
I paid $70/hour for 2 movers and a truck in DFW, TX. I have a subscription to Angieslist, so I used that to find my movers. Lots of people list what they paid on there, so it's really helpful not only for finding a good company, but also for estimating how much things will cost in your area.
