I'm really trying hard to stay with a work out routine. With my new work schedule going to the gym has to be a weekend only thing. I bought workout DVD's but don't really have the space right now to get the full effects of it. I also started a new weight loss supplement and I know it's not all healthy for me but the energy from it is addiciting and it's only for 2 weeks. I've done pretty good about running this past week or so because the weather is so nice but as soon as it gets cold again I'll have to stop since it's so hard on my respiratory system. Any suggestions on ways to actually stick with a routine or how to get this energy naturally once these pills are done?

Re: What is your motivation?
It makes me feel better.
I have a hard time starting exercising again after a long time away from it, but once you get past that, I think you want to do it, because it feels good. If I don't get to the gym 3x a week, I am more achy and sore and have less energy.
Well considering I've been extremely unmotivated lately, take it with a grain of salt. But I find training for a race really keeps me motivated. I like have that goal and not just feel like I'm running to run you know? Can you do a treadmill or do you have an indoor track for when the weather gets bad?
Also for me I think food plays a huge role in how I feel much more so than the exercise. I cut out all non natural occurring sugars, so I do eat fruit and dairy, and eliminate processed carbs and have so much more energy. The sugar thing is huge for me, it's in everything. But when I get it out of my system my energy level is awesome!
Honestly, my motivation is a fear of gaining too much weight.
Beyond that, I find it easier to stay with a workout routine when I'm either working towards a specific event. I got into great shape preparing for Tough Mudder last year, and even though I don't really want to do it again, I'm thinking of signing up just because I know it will get me back in gear.
The other thing that helps motivate me is taking specific classes. I am more likely to work out if I can schedule a specific class with a start and end time. There is also a little social pressure because after a while people expect you to be there and if you miss a class or two they ask you where you've been.
Finally, I get more energy when I work out consistently so maybe if you get a really good routine going that in itself will help your energy levels.
Working out helps my mood, energy & sleep. If I feel like skipping a workout or have a hard time getting out the door I ask myself why I feel like skipping... 99% of the time I don't have a good reason and know that as soon as I get out the door or to the gym I will be able to get through a workout. I also take my gym bag to work so I can go straight to the gym. If I come home and sit down or get busy with something else I will skip my workout.
I agree with Hooly too- signing up for a race or a class will help. I joined a running group that meets every Saturday morning. Finding a workout buddy is nice too- it's harder to skip when you've made plans to meet someone.
My motivation is that working out gives me energy and I want to be healthy. I also want to look a certain way and fit into all of my clothes. I'm going to a bachelorette party in June where we'll spend the weekend by a pool, then probably to Vegas in July, and then I'm in a wedding in August. That's a lot of motivation to look my best!
It sounds like you know this already but STOP using the supplement. Those are terrible for you and not a permanent fix.
There's also lots of exercises online and on Pinterest for working out in a small area. You can do it if you really want to. I know having a goal in mind helps me, maybe sign up for a 10K or half marathon?
It's super short term and I'm almost done with them. I just love the energy that they give me. I seriously haven't had this much energy since before I had DS.
My overall motivation is to be happier in life.
Before my seperation I wasnt overweight, I was obese. I wanted to show my ex that her affair wouldnt ruin me, that it would only make me a better man and a father. And I have done just that. I have lost 130 lbs in the last 2 years and I am in better shape than 80% of the men my age. People that I havent seen in a while can hardly recognize me. I always giggle internally when my exwife looks me up and down now.
I also wanted to set a better example for my kids. Before the weight loss I ate crappy food for EVERY meal and ate tons of it. My kids saw that, something that still makes me ashamed. Now they have seen me take better care of myself through healthier eating and exercsing. Hopefully that is rubbing off on them.
And yes I have shallow reasons for working out everyday in that I want to look good for the purposes of dating. Obviously my opinion is that there is a major difference in trying to date at 360 lbs (obese) and trying to date at 230 lbs(looking fit).
I know you have a lot on your plate Jaks, but just keep your head up and you will achieve your fitness goals.
Sorry for the long reply!! Haha
That's exactly what I'm concerned about. I still think you need to stop taking it. Have you consulted a doctor about it? Those supplements have been found to cause all kinds of problems.
Exercise/Activity is like laundry/chores/cleaning the toilet etc... We don't always like to do it, but you still need to do it.
I just get it in my mind that I am going to do exercise that day/week/month etc and I do it.
I know for some people it has helped to make a schedule and follow it.
Exercise is extremely important and can prevent many health issues later down the road.
