Retraining a cat with litterbox issues

Hi ladies,

One of our cats, Riley, is having litter box issues.  He had a UTI about 6 weeks ago but it has long cleared up (proven by 2 urinalyses).  But ever since then he won't use the litter box to pee.  We have purchased Cat Attract and Feliway (both the diffuser and spray) in the hopes that we can retrain him to pee in the box and not the house.  Realistically, how much work and how much time does something like this take?  Weeks?  Months? Fortunately he is peeing on fabrics that can be washed and not our furniture, but obviously I want to retrain him to use the box.

We have multiple cats and multiple litter boxes.  We don't have dogs.  I have read the FAQs, but does anybody have suggestions in addition to Cat Attract and Feliway?

TIA!

  • I'm not one to ask I suppose since I'm trying to solve this myself! :-)

Especially since he's peeing on fabric, can you confine him to a bathroom for a while? I'm working on confining Lily to a room now.

Cat Attract litter didn't work for me. I'm also using the Feliway spray and plug in and it doesn't seem to be helping enough. We have another vet appointment Tuesday though so maybe it's a different issue for me.

  • Realistically it will take at least several week.

You really should confine him to one room (preferably a small one, like a bathroom). Then, as he gets the hang of it, allow him a little more freedom.

If I confine him could I put him in a room by himself with his own litter box and the feliway diffuser while DH and I are at work, and then let him out when we get home?  We would have to use the guest room.  We don't have a bathroom we could dedicate to just retraining him.

This is what we've been doing, but I have to keep an eye on her because a couple times she has sneaked downstairs to pee when we were brushing our teeth. For the most part she just wants to sit on the bed with us though after a day and night in one room, so it works out fairly well.

  • I had this issue with my cat.  In addition to Cat Attract, here's what I did:

    1) Placed several litter boxes in different locations in the house.

    2) Bought large, disposable litter boxes (Jumbo Wonder) to ensure that they were clean.

    3) Bought Feliway spray (not the diffuser) and sprayed it in the places where she had been peeing inappropriately.

I'm not sure which of these things worked, but something did.  She has the occasional accident (like, once a year) but other than that she consistently uses the litter box.  We are down to one litter box.  I still use the disposable kind (tossed out every 2-3 weeks) with the Cat Attract litter.
