Leaving for Grand Cayman in a few days- tips/advice?

So excited!  We will be renting a car for a few days, checking out Sting Ray City and Rum Point, but generally relaxing and enjoying the sunny weather for the week. Anyone have any recommendations for other activities or dining on the island?

Re: Leaving for Grand Cayman in a few days- tips/advice?

  • We spent a lot of $$$ diving so we went for cheap eats.....All on SMB:

Al la Kebab was great cheap eats. Fully customizable pita sandwiches.  Chicken! Chicken! was good local food.  Coconut Joes had a great hamburger. Little bit nicer....Cimboco was very good fresh, local cuisine. We also enjoyed Triple Crown Pub (ate there 3 times in one week).  We also did the $19 (cayman dollars) all you can eat lunch buffet at Thai Orchid. It was pretty good- mind you I don't love Thai food, but dh seemed to enjoy himself.

The only place we did not like was Aqua Beach. There are two different restaurants w Aqua in the name....this one was near Coconut Joes, casual, open air w a large bar. We were really disappointed in the service. They messed up our order twice so we gave up and ate what they had given us.

Not on SMB: We heard great things about Calypso, but never made it over there (we did not have a car). It got rave reviews so it might be worth checking out.

Took home some Tortuga rum cakes- delicious!!

  • We just got back from Grand Cayman on Friday and had a blast! We did Sting Ray City, a nighttime bioluminescent kayak trip at Rum Point, the Blue Iguana tour at Queen Elizabeth II botanical park, some snorkeling, and lots of relaxing. I wouldn't change a thing, but my H didn't like the kayaking, as it was at night and we forgot mosquito repellant.

We stayed on the (more deserted) East End of the island, so that impacted our food choices, though we did venture out to SMB and Rum Point a couple times. At Rum Point, we loved Kaibo Upstairs (only open Thurs-Sun nights; the downstairs, more casual grill was also good and is open daily). I second the recommendation for Chicken Chicken (near SMB) for inexpensive local food. Also in the SMB area, we enjoyed Ortanique. On the East End, we liked Tukka, which isn't far from the iguanas, but this may be a bit of a drive if you aren't heading East. Our only food regret was taking the concierge's advice to eat at the resort's welcome barbecue our second night there, which was by far the worst food we had on our trip, other than Cayman Airways' in-flight dinner.
