Anyone familiar with Southwest Air and car seats?

Just wondering how they are with checking car seats?  We have two Graco Nautilis seats that I'm thinking of checking instead of renting at the car rental place.  I saw on their site that 2 checked items are free per seat (both kids have a purchased seat) so we could do it as long as they are under 62" I think?

Anyway I was just curious if anyone had any experiences.

Re: Anyone familiar with Southwest Air and car seats?

  • I've flown Southwest with car seats several times.  No one ever measured the seats.  We've flown with car seats and strollers, and had no problems.  They gate checked them without question.  I wasn't comfortable checking them at the ticket counter, because I've seen how bags are handled.  But had no problems gate checking them.  We've also had several flights that had extra seats, and we were able to strap the car seat in to put our daughter (before she turned two) in her own seat.  Those were lovely!
  • They can be checked for free and do not count towards your 2 free checked bags.  I always do a gate check with the car seats though.  I feel like there is less handling when they are gate checked so they are handled a little more gently.  Also, if I gate check it I am pretty sure its getting on our plane and I will have it when we land- if it was with the regular checked baggage and didnt make it on the plane, we would have to end up renting one at our destination which defeats the whole purpose of bringing it!

  • Baby gear always checks free and not as part of your allotment.  We've always checked our seat with our luggage and never had any damage or loss.  We gate check our umbrella stroller.
  • We've flown countless times with our kids and always check the carseats with the luggage.  We've never been charged for the seats.  I'm a big proponent of carrying as little as possible through security.

I have a Safety First bag that we zip the seats into and we've never had a problem. Now that we have one carseat and one booster seat I can squeeze them both in the bag.

  • Thank you all for the input!  I had no idea they'd check seats w/o counting them towards the bag count.  Great info!
