Our neighbors have a condo in Hilton Head that is available in July and August, and we were wondering if this would be a good family friendly trip. It is a 14-hr drive, but we were thinking of splitting that into a 10 hr day, spend the night somewhere, and finish up the next day.
We have two children, ages 9 and 6, and would be willing to take our own bikes if needed.
The condo is right across from the beach/oceanfront, and has two bedrooms and a kitchen, so if we wanted to make this budget-friendly, we could shop and have our own breakfasts and lunches available and maybe just go out to dinner each night.
I know it will be hot and humid. DH likes to golf, but said he wasnt sure about golfing alone every morning.
Re: Hilton Head, SC....any information would be great!
Hilton Head is a great family trip. Bringing your bikes down would be a good idea. If your H wants to play a round or two, I would get the earliest tee time they have. It's going to be dang hot later in the day.
There are a ton of things to do with your kids. Besides the beach, you can bike ride, mini golf, drivin in theater about 20-30 min away, day trips to Beaufort or Savannah. There is a huge children's museum opening in Savannah this May.
There are also many family friendly restaurants around. I would highly recomend HHI for your family.
Your kids are going to love Hilton Head! Around their age is when we started going every year. Now we go when we can, but growing up we went each year for the week of fourth of July. We also had the 14 hour drive - from Southwestern PA. We used to stop in Asheville, NC on the way down. Just as a break.
I wouldn't worry too much about bringing your own bikes unless you have lots of extra room. Bike rentals are cheap and plentiful on the island.
Food on the island isn't that expensive, but we also had a place there and do a lot of cooking. We usually did a "water" activity at least once during the week and got food that way (shrimping, crabbing, shark fishing, deep sea fishing). Stock up on peaches too - because they're not as good up north!
The summer is especially fun for kids because Shelter Cove does Fireworks every Tuesday night with a craft fair. And Greg Russell is still playing in Harbor Town. There is mini-golf everywhere which is also fun for kids.
