How long did it take you to....

Move everything into your new place? Not including unpacking everything and getting settled down. Just have everything at the new house??

We are trying to figure out logistics here. We are not hiring movers, we have the entire house packed up, and we close on Monday at 11 am. We will be borrowing a nice enclosed trailer until Wednesday night.

We do not work Monday, but will not be home until 4 PM on Tues/Weds.

I am hoping we can get everything at the new house by Weds night. The new house is about 15 miles from where we currently live. Not including unpacking everything, of course.

I am not sure why I am starting to panic. Obviously I know that it is okay to just load the large stuff with the trailer and then load the smaller boxes after we give back the trailer. We need to be completely moved out by March 31, which is plenty of time, right??

Re: How long did it take you to....

  • We were able to move in a weekend. We only used a pickup truck, so it took the most time to secure everything in place. Loading the truck took the more time than off loading. On average, we were able to fit 3 large items per load. With a trailer, you should be able to move within the two days, especially if you start on Monday after closing. On Tuesday and Wednesday night you will only have a few hours of daylight for moving. It is hard to move in the dark.

Congratulations. Don't panic. Everything will get moved. I'm impressed that you are already packed and ready to go. We were still packing the weekend we moved.

  • I have moved once a year, every year since 2006. If the entire house is packed, you can move it in a day. Make sure you label boxes so you know what room to put them in.

If you're doing a lot of painting, it's probably easiest to do that first. If not, I would try to get everything out of the trailer by Monday night. You'll feel better if you complete some sort of major milestone. Plus, you might be sore on Tuesday which will make you glad you did all of the heavy lifting on Monday.

You can easily be completely moved out of the old place by the 31st.

  • We had everything pretty much moved in one day.  We didn't move very far.  We started around 3pm and had everything moved by 7pm.  We did bring some boxes over the day before and put them in the rooms they went in.  I went back the next day to clean up and take the refrigerated and frozen foods.  We also had DD spend the night with my mom and had some friends help.

The bolded is the fastest way to do a self move, this is what we will be doing.

Another thing you can do to get it to be a little faster is have the truck and trailer loaded up with the biggest heaviest  thing before you actually get possession of the house. If you have one load loaded and ready to unpack when you get possession then you will be ahead of the game a little bit!

  • I think you should be fine. We haven't moved yet, but I did have movers come out and give us an estimate.  She and I discussed breaking it up into two days, so one load/offload per day.  I think with one full day and two evenings you should have plenty of time to get all the big stuff.

I hope the weather stays dry for you.

  • That is plenty of time. We moved in one day with two pickup trucks and like 5 people. But we were moving from an apartment to a house and it was only 15 minutes away.
