American Club Resort

Spa week is coming quickly and I am dying to go to the Kohler Waters Spa.  I have never been there before.  We would be going for our anniversary and want it to be special.  I would like to get the Lavendar Rain treatment and a 50 minute massage, but we are only going to be there one day I think and would like to be able to enjoy the amenities also.  Are those two treatments too much for one day or would they conflict with each other?

As far as accommodations go, I would love to stay at the Carriage house (It sounds much so luxurious, turn down service, being so close to the spa, DH not having to pay to use the amenities at the spa, etc.).  Are there any tips you could offer to make our stay there extra special?

We would like to have a fancy dinner also.  Which restaurant would you recommend for a romantic anniversary dinner?

Re: American Club Resort

  • I have been there a few times.

I live in a suburb of Milwaukee so it is not far and my company has had a few events there... so I have played golf and stayed in the hotel (not the carriage house part, but regular part) I 4 times for work over the past 7 years.  never went to the spa any of the times I was there for work.

I also spent valentine's day weekend in 2008 there with DH.   That time, we did go to the Waters Spa.  It was ok.  Personally-- I think that it was overpriced for the quality of the treatments to be honest... in Milwaukee, the massages at Neroli and the Pfitzer Spa are better IMO.   It is nice though... because the pool/hot-tub/sauna area is amazing... actually the facility was my favorite part about the spa.  I would not think a lavendar rain treatment and massage would be bad to get together, however there might be some overlap in the massages as I think the rain treatment has massage on foot, scalp but not too much (as long as you like massage, I think it is fine)... I think I got the 50 minute massage and one of the facials.   the lavendar treatment looks better to me than a massage.

To me the best part about Kohler is the golf... if I was not a golfer, I would not go.  Otherwise, it is a nice place, but IMO nothing that special.  the golf however is special... and worldclass.

The food is good.   The immigrant is the one that I would recomend for a special dinner out.   Note that your husband will need a jacket to eat there, so ensure you pack one.  Cucina is a decent Italian place, but not as special (or upscale by a mile as the Immigrant) and the Wisconsin room is nice too, if you like the menu (we don't like it, so we don't eat there).

You will have a great meal!!

  • where is this?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Kohler, Wisconsin.
  • Kohler Wisconsin is a little over an hour north of Milwaukee, or about 2.5-3 hours away from Chicago.

the PGA championship was played there in Aug 2010.   It is a worldclass gold resort.

  • The American Club is our go-to special occasion place and we love it (I am not a golfer and still enjoy it-we have even gone in the winter a few times).  We have never stayed in the Carriage House-we have always stayed in an upgraded room at the regular resort but the Carriage House does look nice.  I think the only difference between the Carriage House and the regular resort is the access to the spa...all other amenities are the same (but vary with the type of room you choose).

The spa is really nice-I can't necessarily say the actual services I received were better than other places but the amenities at the spa are nicer than other resorts I have been to (really nice pool, lounge areas, ect) so you can make a day out of going to the spa.  I don't think getting two treatments in one day would be to much.

The nicest restaurant is The Immigrant Restaurant and the food we had there was amazing (jackets are required for men).  We also had an excellent dinner in The Wisconsin Room during another stay.  The Wisconsin Room has an amazing Sunday Brunch-if you are brunch people make sure you check it out.

Before you book look into the packages-they generally package a hotel stay and some meals together at a discounted price and they sometimes offer discounted spa services.

  • I live 5 minutes away but have never been. I have had friends stay at the carriage house however (within the last year), but they were disappointed in the rooms. Said it was very outdated. Said in the future they would stay in the regular resort rooms. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Wow!  Outdated, really?  I am a bit surprised.  The pictures don't look outdated, at least to me, but who knows how long ago they were taken.

We looked at the Immigrant menu and except for the flourless chocolate cake nothing really seemed that enticing to us.  Right now we are considering either Cucina (rated #1 on tripadvisor) or the Wisconsin Room.  The menu for the Whistling Straits isn't up yet, but I am not sure what kind of restaurant (casual, pub, romantic, formal) it is.  I would like to see that one before we make up our mind.  Would we find something romantic/anniversary worthy off the property nearby?
