I don't post over here very often anymore, my SO is inactive reserve USMC these days. But recently, I've had to deal with NFCU and had a question/vent.
We are looking into different mortgages and have found that NFCU has some of the better interest rates in our area. A went to the local branch (outside large military base) and met with someone who was really no help, but told us to make an appointment with the loan officer for another day. So we did. We met with her for over an hour just to find out she really isn't a loan officer, just a member service with a little more knowledge than the member services guy. Fine. We decided on a VA loan and submitted it.
Low and behold, we found out that I can't be a co-borrower on a VA loan because we aren't married, WHICH SHE KNEW. I'm so frustrated with this bank right now for wasting our time. I did as much research into the VA mortgage before we met with her as well, it just wasn't something that I saw stated.
Is this pretty common with NFCU or am I just dealing with a shotty branch?
Re: Experience with NFCU
Unfortunately the nearest "home buying section" is about 2 hours away. I was just curious as this is really my first time dealing with them.
We tried going through NFCU for our VA loan because we bank through them and they had good promotions going on. We did our application process and they charged us the credit check fee, assigned us a loan advisor, then we didn't hear from them for 2 and a half weeks. Come to find out the advisor just never did anything with it. In the meantime we talked to the loan advisor at Bank of America that our realtor usually uses, and he had a pre-approval for us in a matter of a few hours. So we went with BofA and I told NFCU their mortgage dept sucked and we wanted our money back.
From what I've been told NFCU doesn't have actual loan advisors at all, just basically bank tellers who have been given a little extra training. After going through the whole VA loan process I can say that I am 500% happy with our choice not to go through with them since the process can be a nightmare and it was priceless to have someone to go to with questions that knew exactly what was going on.
