Does anyone here have experience with the Implanon?

I had the Norplant and loved it, so when my IUD expired I had an Implanon inserted.  They warned me that the largest complaint was spotting/breakthrough bleeding.  Typically I do not have a period when I am on a hormone so I wasn't too terribly worried, but I was prepared for spotting and could live with spotting.

The thing is I have been bleeding, moderate to heavy for 3 weeks straight.  Do you think this is a transition period or is this what I am looking forward to for the next three years?  I called my provider, who replied "If you are worried come in for a check up".  Obviously, not real helpful.  I am not really worried, I know its menstrual blood so I am not dying or anything.  To say this has negatively affected my oral sex life is an understatement.

So now I am debating getting it removed, effectively flushing $1200 down the toilet.

Does anyone have an experience to share with this BC?

Re: Does anyone here have experience with the Implanon?

  • I had the same issue, and had it removed after a month. There were some women that experienced bleeding for the first year or two even. For me it wasn't worth it, I just stick with the pill.
  • I haven't used it, but I recently talked with my Dr about my bc options and he didn't recommend it.
  • I've had mine for two years and have had almost constant period level bleeding since about two weeks after I had it put in. I have very limited BC options due to health problems, and we couldn't find anything else that I could tolerate so I've just been dealing with it the whole time, hoping that it would eventually go away. No such luck.

My doctor and I finally decided to start experimenting with my options again, so I'm actually now taking an extremely low dose pill along with my Implanon, which has finally made the bleeding stop. But if there had been another easy option I would absolutely have gotten it removed a long time ago.

  • I'm on my 2nd implant and have had no problems.  I actually have had no period for 4 years now.  My dr. said results are 50/50
  • I've had mine since June of last year and have had only 1 period since then....i do remember my OB/GYN saying it was almost a 50/50 % chance also for how your body reacts to it
