FL Beach Town Help Needed

DH and I are trying to break from our Summer-Vegas trip tradition and are looking for a quaint little beach town with good food, shopping and relaxing.  We're very familiar with the Fort Myers area and are wanting to change it up a bit, so we're thinking fo flying into JAX or Orlando, I realize Orlando is about an hour away from the beaches but airfare is out of control for most of the other airports.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: FL Beach Town Help Needed

  • I'd fly into JAX and drive to St. Augustine.  It's a charming town with cute shops and enough to do to keep your relaxing beach vacation from being boring.
  • I'd try JAX and going to Amelia Island.
  • Anna Maria Island--you could fly into Tampa and it is about an hour and 15 minutes fromTampa or fly into Sarasota and it's a 20 minute ride.

Great town--quiet, free trolley, couple of fishing piers to walk on, restaurants on the beach, a few cute shops. And the beach is long and flat.

We have been going for about 6 years now and love it.

You can also drive to Longboat Key (about 15 minutes away from AMI) to shop and go to a small aquarium. This year we also did a day trip to Busch gardens from AMI and it was great for our 3 and 1 year old b/c there is a Sesame street area and lots of animals.

IAMI reminds me a bit of Sanibel/Captiva if you have ever been there.

  • We drove around Cocoa Beach near Port Canaveral when we came back from a cruise since we didn't fly out until the next day. We walked along the beach, went to Cocoa Beach Pier and shopped at some surf shops including Ron Jon's. We plan to go back there for a low key beach vaca in the furture.
