RnR USAers, how did it go?

I was undertrained and worried I would have to stop for some cramping or dizziness like I have this whole training time. I was so excited that I actually finished that  I sobbed across the finish line - haha.

So how did everyone do? Did you finish before it got too hot?

Re: RnR USAers, how did it go?

  • I PRed by 10 minutes!!!!  I was also undertrained, and I teared up when I hit the Mile 13 marker when I knew I'd finish.  I gave myself permission to walk as needed, due to the undertraining, but I ran the vast majority of the race and am really looking forward running another half in the fall.  YAY!

  • I PR'ed an ugly-ass PR. Lol. That was great.

I thought the race was horrendously run, Like it couldn't  manage the capacity they set to make a bsxillion dollars of of us. That was not great.

Full race report to follow when I can feel my legs again.

  • Good job everyone!  DD and I were out there shaking the cowbell and yelling for everyone.  DH also PR'd by 10 minutes.  Hope your legs all feel better soon :)

Really?  I thought it was pretty good.  It was much calmer after we split off from the half though.

Overall, my day is definitely split into the two halfs.  I ROCKED the first half (2:11, right on pace).  But then had major foot issues (possibly a stress fracture?  I'll have to wait a few days to see if the pain goes away.).  The second half I ran terribly and crossed the finish at 5:00:26.  Not a time I'm proud of,  but I'll take it, ice my foot, and move on.

I wish I had gotten to meet some H&Fers!

  • no PR for me. boo.  mistakes were made.  live and learn. . . .

it was crowded.  and more humid than I was anticipating (did you see that haze on the capitol building from north capitol??). but the organization and the execution of the race far exceeded my expectations.  you couldn't swing a dead cat w/o hitting a porta potty, started on time, well marked (if not well policed) corrals. note that I live 0.5 mi from the start so I walk/jogged there and I didn't check anything so I can't comment on that.

I will miss my National Half though. I felt like a lot of the charm of National was RnR'd out.  the howard university kids who are usually out cheering up a storm and cranking the music were not there today.  no fleet feet cheer section/water stop either. also, how do you do a music themed dc race and not have any dc go go????

so I'm kind of sad for the end of the national marathon.  and sad that I suck at running.  but I'll be back next year.

  • Great job ladies!!! :)

My biggest thing was that there needed to be more trains running.  For the amount of people, there needed to be trains running from Vienna more than 20 minutes apart.  I got on the train at 6:40 at Clarendon and they were already pretty full.  There should have been trains running more frequently, and there probably should have been more porta-potties.  I saw people sprinting down to the start my entire time around to the start line (I was in the back in Corral 24) because they were stuck on the porta-potty lines (I assume).  I use DH as my "bag check", so I can't comment on that either.

All in all, I agree that it was run pretty well, and certainly more accessible and a better race for me than the last one I did, the horribly-run Hot Chocolate 5/15K.

Nice job, everyone! I feel like the RnR series is so hit or miss, but they generally need to scale the eff back. A 20,000 person run is still really big - why they are allowing 40k+ (the number at the LV RnR in December) is beyond me.  How big was this one total?

the trains. . . that's on metro (which is generally full of suck, esp on the weekends lately). they do what they want.

as far as porta potties, I felt like there were a lot of them, but I was able to pee thrice prior to getting into the corral. I will say it should have been better advertised where they were. I had no idea that there were PP near the corrals and I think a lot of people didn't know about the PP in the actual runners village given the lines at the PP outside the fence.

ETA: there were about 20K finishers (half+full).  I believe that is roughly the size of the Marine Corps Marathon.

Yes, metro was doing track work on Orange. They told everyone that the trains would be sparse starting at 8pm last night. Dumb, but it happens all the time.

I thought there were plenty of porta potties at the start, but where were they along the course? I saw 3 total in the first half of the half and then another 5 or so after. But then again, I have never run a race in this town with enough along the actual course.

Bag check was great! I dropped my bag off in seconds and picked it up in just a few minutes.

I was actually surprised that the whole thing went as smoothly as it did.

  • PR for me....but it was my first half so I was guaranteed a PR.

I'm pretty happy with my time 1:53:36, but disappointed that I know I could have done better. I had a few walk breaks at 6, 8, and even the last mile (gasp). My pacing was kind of all over the place. I kept telling myself to slow down, but they I would creep back up as I lost my concentration I fueled at 45 minutes in and I was feeling good at 1:30, so decided not to fuel to avoid cramping. That was a mistake since I hit a wall 12.5 miles or so. It wasn't until I saw the 13 mile marker that I knew I could make it, lol.

I was stuck in a long PP line and definitely running down next to the corrals at 7:58 and had to squeeze into a corral fence.

    Gear check was easy peasy.

I had a few mishaps because of my rush to get to the corral, my headphones were twisted up in my fuel belt for most of the race causing them to be a little tight.

I was really happy to have my headphones considering it seemed like every time I approached a band they were on a break.

I learned a lot of good lessons about racing re: fueling, pacing, hills.

Metro, eep! I take the Metro every day and I've seen some crowded trains. I think I was on one of my most crowded trains ever on the way to the race. When the doors opened at L'Enfant. Only 2 people got on at my doors and I was one of them. It's really helpful being small sometimes!

I met up with DS and DH after the race and we had fun drinking some beer and wandering around.

Thanks for coming out to cheer :)

My friend and I ran the half, and we thought the race as a whole was extremely well run.  We drove down from Columbia, MD, and got there around 6am.  No trouble parking at all and the lot was just a short walk to the armory.  Bag check was super easy and I loved that we could stay warm in the armory until it was time to start.  There were lines for the portopotties, but there are always lines.  We thought that there was plenty of them.

The weather was absolutely gorgeous for the half, but I realize that for those running the full it got hot later on.  I thought the course was great, it was challenging, but not super hard, there were plenty of volunteers, drink stations and water, etc.  Overall I'm not a big fan of the RnR and huge races, but I would probably do this one again.

I PRd by almost a minute, so I'm super stoked!  Considering I was also undertrained and didn't think I'd get anywhere near my PR.

  • Congrats ladies!  I was planning to come and spectate and cheer on some of my friends, but we had guests Friday night who did not leave until 2AM so I didn't make it this time.
