Anyone travel for sporting events?
I am thinking of taking my husband to a international rugby match for his birthday. The tickets don't get released until July and they sold out within the hour last year. Of course once tickets go on sale airfares increase so in our experience we book flights and acom and then the tickets (we brought them last year through my mothers pre-release code which she won't get this year). You can also buy packages with garanteed tickets to the game but they are more expensive and DH and I support different teams, I'm not sure he would enjoy himself with a bunch of Australian supporters!
What have you done in the past or WWYD? Book the airfares and acom and risk the tickets or book the package?
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.
Re: Anyone travel for sporting events?
How far in advance would you be purchasing the tickets to the event?
I have only done an international sporting event once- San Diego Chargers game in London in 2008. I bought the tickets in May and booked the hotel in August and we couldnt book our flights until September (DH was working for an airline and we flew standyby). The game was in October.
If you are already planning on visiting the area for vacation book your flights now.
Even if you cant get tickets to the event you can still have a nice vacation.
I travelled to D.C. last year for the Barca VS Man U game. I'm in Toronto, for reference. Surprisingly, I called in and I got a ticket in a great section close to the Barca side. Not only that but it was 3 or 4 seats away from my friends and I had booked my tickets HOURS after they had booked theirs. As I bought my ticket, I purchased my flight at the same time. Make a note of when the tickets will be released and time yourself to be waiting to access that site/those tickets at the very moment OR call in and see.
GL!

Not sure this would help you... we have a ton of college football bowl games and most teams find out where they are going on the same day (within the hour), so travel from the college home airports out to the destination cities jumps in price right away. Last year, I used aa.com to put my desired flight on hold the night before because we were only going to travel if the team was picked for the specific destination. The hold was good for 24 hours which was perfect timing. We paid a reasonable amount for the tickets while everyone else paid probably twice as much (or more... or drove).
Not many airlines do the 24 hour fare hold though.
I have
*Great. The Nest ate all of my post except the first two words which make me look like an unhelpful braggart. What I typed was something along the lines of I've got to know what the event is and what works out to be the best option for you. We're looking at going to the HK Sevens next year if we can get tickets, so we'll be in the same boat.
