5K Report (sorry, long)

Big SmileI ran the Hartford Marathon Foundation's O'Niantic 5k yesterday. It took place in the Niantic, CT which is right by the Niantic Bay. It is a little seaside town. The plan was that we would meet my inlaws at the race so that after my girls did the PeeWee mile they would watch the girls while DH and I did the 5K. We easily found them and went to the theater to pick up our packets. Unfortunately HMF messed up and the kids didn't get shirts although we pre-registered them. :0(  My 3 year old did the 100 yd dash with me. She was so very proud of herself. She beamed the entire way, holding my hand for part of it and pumping her little arms the other part of it. She got to cross the big finish line and each participant was given a bag with their medal, a fruit snack and a water.

My 5 year old ran the 1/2 mile with DH. She did so well. It was untimed but Dh said she darted out at full speed then petered out and rekicked towards the end. I got to see her cross the finish line but unfortunately didn't have my camera for that part.

After their race, DH and I walked to the start line for the 5k. Last year this race was 500+ runners. This year they had 1,100!! Dh started more towards the front based on his pace and I went towards the back of the pack.  There were a bunch of announcements but I didn't really hear them with all the chattning.

It was weird when the girls were doing the kids races, I wasn't really thinking about the 5k. It was that thing I had to do after them. Standing waiting to start, it all sort of hit me.  The horn started the race. I just got moving. The crowd really thinned out after the first half mile. There was a bag piper playing which was pretty cool. I was feeling pretty good but quickly realized that my cardiotrainer wasn't working so I wasn't hearing splits. I was able to get it working to figure our my pace but it wasn't going to record my spilts and map it accruately. At the 1 mile mark, the clock wasn't working which stunk. After another 1/4 mile the first place guy came through (15 minute winner.) on his way back. I started watching for DH because I knew he could be on his way back already. I'm sure some of the other runners hated me because I cheered for the other people on the way back. DH did come through soon after that.

I had partipated last year so I knew the course.  It is flat with only two little hills that are only noticeable because the course is so flat. I was tempted to stop but didn't. I could see the water station and debated on it. When I got to the water station, I skipped it. Then came the guy with the bongo drum which was festive. There was another couple running near me. The guy was giving the woman a pep talk the entire way and I pretended he was talking to me.  I got to the mile 2 marker and saw I wat 22 minutes. I was really happy with that!  The last mile wasn't so bad. I kept thinking that I had to report back to DH, my inlaws, this board as I had clearly stated what my goal was in this race. So I kept chugging. I came up to the last little leg and the street was lined with people cheering. DH and the kids were screaming. I could see the clock at 34.35 and started to kick a lot because I really wanted that under 35 time. I came across the clock at 34:49. My net time was 34.01.  I met both of my goals!!!

DH has a personal best and finished 66th at 21:16.
