Weird question about getting rid of "fat" clothes

When is the right time to get rid of those clothes that no longer fit? I am not talking about the jeans that are a bit too loose, I am talking clothes that are a good 4 sizes too big, that literally fall off when you try them on.

I feel like if I donate them, I am jinxing myself and will gain it all back and have to buy more. But at the same time, I feel like having then hang around is almost like an "out". I can easily move up if the new clothes stop fitting.

How long did you maintain before you said, "This is it! I will never wear you again so get out of my house!"?

Re: Weird question about getting rid of "fat" clothes

  • I usually keep the next size up and get rid of anything 2 sizes too big or bigger. However, I think I'm going to get rid of the next size up clothes too. I don't need them hanging around.

  • I kept mine far too long in the back of a closet I never went into (way before DH and I were even dating.....I lost most of my weight in 96-1999). I finally got rid of them around 2003. Today I always keep 1-2 pairs of pants that are a size bigger just in case I gain a few pounds or am "bloated." Other than that, everything is the right size. If you don't want to get rid of them all, keep your favorite pair of pants and shirt. Donate/give away the rest.
  • I am still 50 pounds from goal, so I am getting rid of my clothes as soon as I shrink out of them.

When I get closer to goal, I think it would be smart to keep a few pants in the size up. Shirts seem to fit more extra weight in a size, so i probably won't keep a size bigger for shirts.

I am almost too smalll for my favorite dress that I wore leaving my wedding reception and on my honeymoon, and I'm unsure what to do with it. I don't really want to part with it.= Ideas?

If you really love the dress, take it to a tailor and have it taken in.

  • My strategy:

1 size to big: keep a pair or two.  some days you are just bloaty.  don't need a muffin top making you feel even worse.

otherwise they were all donated to friends/goodwill.  I was lucky that when I was losing most of my weight I had a friend who was also losing but was a size or two bigger, so she took my clothes as I lost and then gave them away.  we saved tons of money on transition clothing doing this.

one of my big regrets was not keeping at least one pair of my biggest jeans around as a reminder. so I think you should def keep a pair around as a reminder of how far you've come.

  • I kept around my favorites that are classically cut incase I need them if I ever get pregnant.

  • I lost 50 pounds 4 years ago and I kept one pair of my biggest pants - size 18- to remind me just how big I was, and I donated everything except my current size 6 and one size up (in pants). I'm very short and if I gain 5 pounds some of my pants don't fit, and I tend to gain/lose 5 pounds throughout the year so having one size up in pants gives me enough of a wardrobe if I gain 5 pounds. I know that if I have to wear those pants that are one size up I better get on track with eating and exercise because I don't have any clothes that are bigger. it's a good way to keep myself from gaining more than 5-10 pounds. I loved getting rid of my bigger clothes - it was liberating, and it has not allowed me to gain a lot of weight back because I refuse to buy new clothes in a bigger size.

This.  Once I'm done having kids I'll probably get rid of stuff several sizes too big.

  • I've kept only expensive or sentimental clothes in the bigger sizes (just as I have in the past with smaller sizes).
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.
  • I finished losing weight last May or so, and it took me a long time to buy enough new, smaller clothes. As I tried things on and they didn't fit, I put them in a big bag in my closet. It got to the point that I hadn't taken a single thing out of the bag, even for 'fat' days, for months. I had a friend over and she wanted some of my older, larger (but still good) workout clothes, and we went through the bag. She took a few things for her to keep, 2 skirts that she gave recs for tailoring, and everything else was literally falling off my body, way beyond being bloated. She took if for the hospital "clothing closet" for the hospital she works at. I don't regret it at all. None of the clothing had sentimental value for me, and the weight gain was more of a bump in the road for me, but I was happy to even get rid of my old "regular" clothes, as working out has given me a new shape, even if the weight isn't significantly lower than before.

  • I have lost almost 50 lbs (still about 30 to go), and have not gotten rid of anything yet. (Started in size 22, now at about a 16). I do realize it is time! I am thinking I will get rid of everything except the next size up of whatever my current size is. I will keep one pair of "before" or "fat" pants, just for comparison and memories sake - to remind me how far I have come.

  • I started at a 26/28.  When I got to the point that my 20s were getting too big, I felt it was time to let go.  I made up my mind that I would never allow myself to get back into the 20+s again and sold most of them (I still have some to sell b/c they were out of season).  I kept one pair of jeans for after pictures, but that is it!

I'm in a 14/16 right now and I'm still hanging on to my 18s and the 16s that no longer fit.  I will probably keep these until I get to goal (around a size 8/10/12 - still depends on what happens with my body when I get lower) and stay there for a while.

  • I only have one size too big and I keep them around in case I have another baby - I cannot wear maternity one more day than I have to so I size up until my regular clothes fit again.  So far, so good x3!

4 sizes too big - get rid of them!!!!
