Shorter cruise before a longer cruise?
We want to go on a cruise next year with our DS who would be 15 months old when he sail (if we decide to sail next March). We are worried that a week would be too long with him but we have always done 4-5 day cruises and both DH and I want a bigger ship this time with new locations. We always take one longer vacation a year plus a long weekend away at some point in the year. Since we already have our vacation planned for this summer, we were thinking of doing a 3 or 4 night cruise in Nov or Dec and bring DS who will be 11 or 12 months old at the time. We would be doing this as a test to see if we think it would be managable to bring him on a week long cruise. FWIW, the in-laws may come with us on the week-long cruise. Does this sound like a good idea to do a shorter cruise as a test run or do you think it's just a waste of money and we should go straight for the 7 night cruise? If we don't do the shorter cruise, we would still be doing a long weekend somewhere close. Our vacation this summer is in a cabin so I don't think that would be a good test run as how he would do on a cruise.
Re: Shorter cruise before a longer cruise?
Sounds like a great test run to me. And FWIW I've heard of a LOT of people doing exactly this to make sure their kids will enjoy the vacation on a ship as much as they do. A lady on one of my upcoming cruises took her son on a 4 night cruise (before taking him to Asia on a 14 nighter). Turns out he didn't like the ship, didn't like the play place, and wasn't having a good time, so she ended up cancelling the Asia cruise. She was happy to have spent a little $$ on the 4 night to save the big bucks on her 14-night cruise.
Are you on cruise critic? There is a whole board dedicated to cruising with kids, the families there will be very helpful in giving you their experiences.
