Ellsworth AFB Questions

Good Afternoon ladies!

So, I mostly just lurk but I've introduced myself a few times. Anyhow I'm Jenny, I enlisted in the Army a few months ago and I leave for BCT in May.

I'm thinking about going to stay with my mom for the next 2 months while I wait to ship out, but she lives near Ellsworth (within running distance actually) and I'm afraid I may go crazy with boredom. So tell me I'm insane, or that you think i'll be fine.

Is the base decent (I have access with my Future Solider ID card)? Will I have anything to do? I have family in Rapid City and Hermosa, which my mom is saying is like 10 mins away.

I'm currently living in Tampa (near MacDill) so I know it's going to be a huge change of pace, which is kind of what I'd like, less partying and oppurtunity for trouble, more working out and relaxing in SD...

So, the good, the bad? Tell me what you can. Thanks!

Re: Ellsworth AFB Questions

  • The base isn't particularly spectacular in terms of amenities, unless the BX and Subway sandwiches are your idea of fun.  Most of the recreational stuff is off base and it's outdoorsy stuff like camping, hiking, off-roading. Go see Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse memorial, do the Black Hills hiking trails.

  • Ya know, I really do love Subway. :P

Thanks for the info. I figured most of my "fun" while I'm there will be outdoorsy things, which is fine by me! :)

  • I actually live in Rapid City, and PP is right. There is really nothing on base to do other than the gym or bowling. The Community Center is closing in a few months so you might not be able to even get in there, depending on when you go visit. There ARE things to do in Rapid though, and the black hills are beautiful! I'd go down needles highway (its gorgeous!) and do a lot of the touristy stuff, its a good way to 'explore' the area. Smile
