Core Exercises

I have been running for less than a year. I have done a few 5ks , increased my mileage up to 8-9 miles, and also walk with my mom on days I don't run.  I live in farm/mountain country area.  While running 5 miles today, I really noticed how tired my core area got when doing all the hills.  It was for a relay course I am doing next week and it is a very hilly part of our valley.  I admit I do not cross train as much as I should.  I notice when I do road cycling with DH in the last month, that my core area was weaker than my legs (going up hills).  At least it feels like my core area feels worse than my legs do.

Any recommendations on where to start cross training and improving my core area?  I am open to DVDs, class ideas, etc.  I recently purchased a Bob Harper Kettlebell DVD.  I did it once and I could not walk up steps for 2 days!!!  I loved it but it was so hard.  I am anxious to start increasing my fitness and pushing myself harder.  And I figured no better place to ask than here!  Thanks so much!!
