Any Ft Knox or Ft Bragg nesties??
Hello, my hubby is in the process of getting an AGR position and we are trying to decide on a location. Anyone out there living or lived in either location? Any info would be so helpful! TIA!
Re: Any Ft Knox or Ft Bragg nesties??
There are several ladies on here at Bragg. They should chime in later. I know a lot of people who have been stationed at both places. Most people I know loved them both. However, those people are outdoorsy and don't just sit on their butts waiting for excitement to just come along and smack them in the face. The people I know who didn't like either were either people who are used to big cities where there is always action around every corner or they are just complainers in general.
Fayetteville, the town outside Bragg, is a bit trashy in places. It's not the entire town that is trashy and that's not the only town around. There is a lot to do around the area. The base is huge.
I was at Knox two years and loved it. They've recently redone most of the housing and buildings on post. Radcliff has some iffy areas but also some nice ones. Elizabethtown is about 15 mins away and has all your basic chain stuff and a mall. Louisville is about a half hour away and a ton of fun. The college gives out tickets to their games sometimes and we saw their minor league baseball team for cheap. The first Friday of every month they shut down 4th street for Fourth Street Live which is basically a big block party with a bunch of bands. There's a ton of outdoorsy stuff to do. We went mountain biking, hiking, and white water rafting often. Lexington is about two hours and it's awesome to see all the beautiful horse farms and wineries. And of course there's the derby and Churchill downs in Louisville. Seriously an awesome place. I miss it.
Is your husband guard or reserve? What AGR job lets him pick the location?
We are at Bragg right now (DH is AF). Its... alright. I'm not a huge fan, but its not horrible. I am definitely not a southerner lol! The town is really tiny (compared to what I am used to), and a lot of it really does pander to the military. I have encountered a lot of really negative Army stereotypes here, although I have also met some really great people. You'd probably find that most places. It does seem like the kind of place where it is what you make it, so we are working on making the best out of it.
I think a lot of my negativity is influenced by DH's specific unit/job beacuse it is really disorganized and he has gotten a lot of flack for being AF, so he really doesn't like that part of it. Also, the people I work with seem really like small town, a little ignorant or unknowledgable about the world, but I am sure that is not everywhere here either (and it would be found plenty of other places in the world).
So, while I dont *hate* it here, I am not wanting to stay too long or I'd probably go crazy.
I changed my name
I'm starting to think that's just a majority of the base. He thought his first unit here was bad, but he hates the unit he's with now even more. There's just been so many different things that have literally taken months to fix and it keeps coming.
Anyway, I come from a tiny town (pop. under a 1000) so this is definitely an upgrade for us. In that sense, I prefer it to home. I don't have to drive 30 minutes just to go to Target. We're close to the beach, DC, an Ikea, and the mountains. We go camping and hiking a lot on weekends and that's probably our favorite part. We live in a great neighborhood and have met some great people here.
On the other hand, I'm too scared to go out of our little neighborhood at night on my own. There have been a lot of senseless crimes in the past year or so, and I just stay in. I know several other girls my age that feel the same way. Traffic sucks. I hate living in the Bible Belt. There's a lot to do here, but there's also a lot you have to drive to. I miss St. Louis with it's awesome zoo, aquarium, museums, parks and downtown.
I guess all in all, some days you love it, some days you hate it, most days you're too preoccupied with life to really care.
I PCS'd from Bragg last June. The big pro's for us were that it has great restaurants (those SF guys bring home foreign wives who open great restaurants, as the folklore goes
, lots of outdoor stuff to do, a large military community (meaning easy to make friends), and cheap housing. Also relatively easy for a spouse to get a job due to it being a large town. Good for families, not so good for a childless couple who wanted to party (us). Also because Bragg is so big you can get moved within the base a few times and not have to PCS over and over... don't know if that's a pro or a con!
The con's were that crime rates were higher than I'd like in some neighborhoods, there was a lot of stereotypical southern small-mindedness, and religion was a big part of the culture and as agnostics some people didn't like that.
When I think about Fayetteville I miss 1) our big cheap house, 2) the restaurants, 3) our old friends. I have no idea about the other base, sorry!
