For those who have lost weight

What did you do about clothes? I just bought jeans 2 weeks ago (old navy so cheaper) and they already look extremely baggy. I am starting to feel better in my skin so I don't want baggy clothes. I'm more or less out of depression so I really want to like what I see when I get dressed. Did you buy new clothes every time they started to look bad? Or did you just wait until you couldn't even keep them up?

Re: For those who have lost weight

  • I buy a little at a time.

    Like kind of a reward

    I was wearing 24s and now I am in a 20 (a little baggy) 18 (a little tight)

So when I put on pants and they were REALLY baggy i went and bough myself a 2 new outfits. But on clearance. so i don't spend too much since I am not done losing.

  • I did both. I bought new jeans when they looked bad straight out of the dryer, as opposed to a full wearing. I never spent a ton, a pair every size at Old Navy. As for work clothes, I did a lot of shopping at Target, but usually every 2 sizes. I could get away with less fitted slacks and skirts for longer periods of time than jeans.

I didn't spend a lot at all, just a few essential pieces and when I started to taper, I got some of my nicer things tailored. It is hard to feel good about losing weight when you don't feel good in your clothes, but there is no need to go broke buying a new wardrobe at every size.

  • I lost about 50 pounds several years ago and went from a size 18 to a size 6. I luckily had clothes all the way down to 10-12 because that is what I started at before gaining a lot of weight, so I was fine with clothing until then. When I got below a size 10, I bought several works pants in 8, a couple of jeans in 8, and tops in small. When the 8s started to just look too big, I invested in basically a whole new wardrobe in size 6 because I was happy at that weight and didn't expect to lose much more weight. I did like to have clothes that fit as I lost weight because it made me feel better and the baggy clothes didn't help with my body image, so I think as you are losing weight, I would invest in a few pieces in each size, try to shop sales, and then when they start to look too baggy, invest in a few new pieces. You should know when you are at your goal weight and don't plan on losing more than you can spend money on a whole new wardrobe. I do know that Old Navy jeans tend to stretch a lot, I never liked that about them. I like going to Macys for sales on jeans. Congrats on your weight loss!

  • From size 26/28 down to about 20/22, I had my old clothes from when I fit in those sizes before.  My partner also has a lot of stuff in 18s and 20s that I borrowed.  I shopped clearance and thrift stores to fill in the gaps.  GAP outlet and Old Navy are great for their clearance sections (and even some of their regular stuff).

Once I ran out of my old clothes, I mostly buy every other size unless I find a really good deal.  I'll also will alternate (ex: I'll buy brown pants in 20 and 16, but buy black pants in 18 and 14).  I still try to find things on sale, clearance, eBay or in thrift stores.  I don't mind that my clothes are somewhat lower quality because I know that I'll only wear them for a few months.

I've been reselling a lot of my clothes on ebay to recoup the cost of all my new clothes.  I held on to them for a while, but then decided I was never going to see those sizes again, so I let it all go.  I don't get back what I spent on most things, but it's something!

  • I shop at thrift stores all the time.  I find all kinds of nice jeans and clothes there for super cheap.  Consignment stores are also a great option - in my town there's one for "junior" clothes that I go to for jeans and one for "career" clothes that I go to for work.

  • I buy just a little here and there and have been making do. I just can't bring myself to spend a lot of money on clothes I know I will barely wear! It does help that I have some basic jeans and dress pants from when I had lost weight a few years back...but right now I am almost at my low then, so pretty soon I will even be past those and have nothing to "shrink into".

I started at size 22 and am currently about a 16.

  • For work clothes I downsized immediately; for just daily stuff, I wore it until I couldn't keep it on respectably (then they  became my bang around the house/cleaning clothes).

But we're really just talking a matter of sizes here, not a dramatic change.

  • I'll second head to your local consignment or thrift store. I can't tell you how many pairs of new or almost new name brand pants I've gotten for $2-5 at Goodwill. Kohls and JC Penny are good for cheap, decent clothes, too. Even Walmart since you won't be wearing them for long.

    THIS.

Fortunately for me, I put on all my weight over several years of TTC and saved by expensive, good items in a guest closet. Really I mark my weight loss milestones by what pieces I can return to my closet.

But for those in between moments when nothing fits I hit up thrift stores. If you're still losing weight, you don't need to find long lasting, quality pieces, just something  stylish to get you through a month or two until you drop more weight.
