I want to start knitting- where do I start?

So I definitely have no idea where to start, but I want to start knitting! It looks like so much fun :) I would love to do basic stuff like scarves, hats, mittens, etc.  Are there any good books to recommend (with pictures/clear instructions), or should I take a class? I've been thinking about enrolling in an introductory class at either Michaels or Joanne's, are those any good? Thanks in advance!

  • Check out the FAQ link at the top of the board.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Ok great! Sorry, I had no idea that kind of stuff was on the FAQ! I will definitely be using that info :)

  • I am a huge fan of the knitting looms!  I tried knitting and it just wasn't for me.  I kept dropping stitches.

  • I had a friend who tried to teach me about a year ago, then when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy I taught myself using tutorials on Youtube. Start by searching for "casting on" then "basic knit stitch" and finally "casting off". A scarf is a good way to start, and fat needles are more forgiving.

Hmmm...thats an idea that might work for me. I've tried kniting with a stick once before (I was like 13) and I always dropped the stiches too! I might have improved in my old age, but I'm doubtful so I'll have to get one :) Whats a good brand?

  • I started out with the knifty knitter and still use it quite a bit.  I love it and there are lots of pattern books to make beautiful scarves, hats, mittens, etc.  I got mine at Michael's with a 40% off coupon.

Also, the most helpful teaching tool I have found is The Complete Beginners Guide to Knitting DVD.  I bought it on Amazon.  http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Beginners-Guide-Knitting/dp/B000A0P6A4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332782124&sr=8-1

Hth!  It is a fun hobby that you can take anywhere.
