Hi there!
I will be running my first half marathon in 2 weeks! (yay!)
Here is a little back story..... I have been training since January. My training has been pretty good, stayed on track, and really worked hard. I was running around a 9 min pace and my goal was to break 2 hours.
Two Saturday's ago, I went out for a 12 mile run and to my wonderful surprise, my pace was around the 8:30 mark. I thought it was a fluke and really pushed myself to the same thing on my 11 mile run this Saturday. Finished with a pace of 8:18. In my head I am thinking wonderful and reset my goal to 1:50.
Saturday after the run, yesterday, and still today, my knee is not feeling the greatest and I can't tell exactly what it is. Feels pretty sore behind my knee in the bend of my leg. I have started to ice it every chance I can.
I know I need to rest it as much as I can within these next two weeks to make sure I am ready for the race, but I am scared to death I am going to lose some of the speed/endurance with taking a couple days off.
Will I really lose time off my pace and kiss my goal of 1:50 goodbye, or should my pace remain strong even though I am not sticking to the training plan these last two week?
Thanks girls!
Re: Talk reality to me... (first half)
Taking two days off for a potential injury will not affect your speed or endurance. What will affect your speed and endurance will be to push through without resting and then really injuring yourself and not being able to race in two weeks.
You'll be fine if you take some days off.
Definitely rest, you will not undue all of your training by resting. Your body needs it, and will thank you for it later! Pushing through and injuring yourself more will force you to rest even longer!
Even if for whatever reason you don't make sub 1:50, a sub 2 hour half is a huge accomplishment! I've ran 9 halves and have yet to break the two hour mark. It's your first one, so really, your only goals should be to stay healthy and finish. If you try to push through this injury, you may not even make it to the start.
Thanks a lot for your input! That is exactly what I needed to hear and will be taking a couple much needed rest days. I need to push the goals aside and realize I am going to PR no matter what and make sure I am just healthy enough to finish. It is so hard not to get all caught up in time though! Haha.
Thanks again girls!
