Home Depot is smoking their lunch

H and I had Home Depot come out this weekend to talk about potentially refacing our cabinets.  As ESD knows, our kitchen is TEENY TINY!  We have a grand total of 12 cabinets and 7 drawers.  TINY!

We were considering the option of refacing as our cabinets are made of solid oak... just not our style.  I actually gave up the idea of having glass in two of the cabinets (above the stove), due to having them refaced instead of new cabinets installed.  I found a style I love (Shaker-style with a beadboard in the middle in a warm cherry color).

And then the guy (who sounded like Ricky Ricardo) quoted our price...

$7500

As ESD knows how small our kitchen is- she laughed her azz off when I informed her of this price.

It looks like we'll be buying new cabinets and have H and H's BFF install them.  Now that we can afford to, I was hoping to get away from H having to do everything in our house.  I know it doesn't bother him in the least (I LOVE having a super handy H... if I ever get divorced, someone will need to take a test on the level of their handiness before I even consider going on a date).  Whatevs.

The moral of this story:  Home Depot is a crackhead and should be avoided for cabinet refacing.

Re: Home Depot is smoking their lunch

  • That sucks!
  • Yep.

We are just about done re-doing our kitchen. It is really small (8 cabinets, 2 drawers and ~14 sq ft of counter space). The cabinets are nice, solid oak, but the stain the builders used was cheapass and it was fading to a hideous shade of orange. The cabinet doors thenselves are fine, somewhat plain 1991 builder cabinets.

We used a cabinet re-finishing kit and H had them re-finished in a couple days. The new counters and sink just went in on Friday. Now we just need new appliances. They're all original to the house, so they're just about dead.

We've avoided Home Depot through the whole process. No thank you. We shop at Lowe's or the small hardware store in town.

I want a pic when it's all done, srs!

Yeah, we're essentially gutting our kitchen.  The ceiling has to come down because of some water damage that happened a week before H closed on the house (he's been there since 2002).  Then we're doing cabinets, counters, sink, floors, stove/oven and microwave (the fridge and dishwasher are new and both stainless... we were previously replacing the appliances one-at-a-time as they crapped out).

  • DH and I went there also when we were starting our kitchen renovation recently, and I personally think that Home Depot is super expensive for their kitchens, so we went to a local mom and pop and it was WAAAAY cheaper.

Do you have something like a "Cabinets to Go" in your area?

    http://www.cabinetstogo.com/

Most times, you'll get really good prices, but should be a good option for you if your kitchen is small.

  • Sorry to butt in again, but I just finished gutting out my entire kitchen and installing everything new, so I know what you're about to get into!

If you're gutting the whole thing out I highly suggest installing radiant heating in your flooring.

In the winter, you wont have to use much heat in your kitchen because the radiant heating recirculates the water under the floor, and your utility bills will go down.

Id also go green on your insulation, you'll save big on your bills. Call your utility company and tell them that you installed green installation and they will give you a discount.

Thanks for the info Alisha!  H works in the "energy efficiency" industry so he's ALL on top of that.  LOL!  I'm not sure about the radiant heat.  If we were taking up the floors in the bathroom (which I DO hope to do someday) I would definitely be pushing for radiant heat there.  I'll definitely consider it!

ESD has recommended a good kitchen cabinet outlet one town over from me. I think we're going to check it out. But I'll definitely take a look into the place you suggested too!

And ESD- I already passed this suggestion on to a coworker who also was looking into refacing her cabinets this weekend.  She has crappy azz particle board cabinets... so it looks like her best bet is to going to be all new cabinets.

Yay cool! I had a really good experience there so I hope you find something you like. That cabinet re-facing quote is unreal. If you don't find anything you like, let me know. I can ask my dad for recommendations for other places.

    Crazy right?

When I did the kitchen in the Condo I had 10 cabinets and 1 drawer, they quoted 5500 to reface.. WTF! That didn't even include countertop!

I went to IKEA and got all new cabinets (they don't offer refacing..) for $1500, I paid a contractor I found through a friend about $700 to install, got my counter through a local mom and pop shop for $800 installed (by two guys that sang Disney songs the entire time = awesome!), and because things seemed so cheap I got new lino done too another $800 including installation.

I don't understand why Home Depot refacing is so bloody expensive, even for their crap white cheap ass doors and fronts...

  • That sounds really off.  We renovated our current home and put an addition (the kitchen downstairs/master BR upstairs) before we moved in.  We went to Home Depot to draw up kitchen plans and get an estimate for our roughly ~200 sq. ft. kitchen, cabinets/appliances on all 3 walls + large island with beadboard, 2 glass cabinets, and cherry wood they quoted us at about $13,000-$14,000.  That's a total of 13 drawers and 15 large cabinets and 2 turn styles, 1 in each corner under the counter with a sunken/framed fridge and wall oven.

If you live anywhere near Amish, I recommend asking around about a cabinet builder.  That's the route we ended up taking, we're in love with the end result, it's all solid cherry (Home Depot cheaps out and supplements the wood that people don't see with crap stuff) and it was thousands less INCLUDING labor/installation.

  • HD did our cabinets, countertops and island when we built our house in '06 and it was about $3500. For more cabinets than that, and with beveled glass in a few of them. They are oak. We installed them ourselves and they threw in few knobs and pulls. However, they suck. The shelves have fallen out numerous times, the countertop on the island doesn't quite fit and the trim on the island is coming unstuck. I am not satisfied. And of course, it's too late to get anything refunded. I'd use somewhere else for sure.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and warnings!  I will definitely take a look into all of our options.

And LeahKate- that BLOWS!  I'm so sorry.  Nobody likes to sink a few grand into something and have it look like crap just 6 years later.  Thanks for the warning!
