I don't understand the whole argument of proving whether it was or wasn't self defense. Isn't that why they have trials?
He admitted he shot him. That should be more than enough reason to arrest him.

See, I think even the people in charge of our legal system don't get that.
One of the key things I kept going into open mouth posture in the Devil's Knot book about was when the judge in the case would say that the cops had already proven stuff before the trial was finished as a reason to turn down objections. It's like, No, you assholle! That is the point of the trial to determine proof.
Exactly. Isn't the whole point of the trial to prove it was self-defense? I know innocent until proven guilty, but they're not even going to look at the possibility of guilt?

I mean, judges make certain decisions on evidentiary value and admissability, and the police (and more likely, the DA) make certain calls about whether there is enough evidence to pursue charges. That said, there seems like more than enough evidence to at least further investigate. I mean the child was carrying Skittles and an ice tea and the shooter admits on the tape to following him.
