Dog advice

So Bentley has been on Purina One Lamb and Rice (I know, I know) since he was a puppy. Sams was out of the Lamb and Rice so we got Chicken and Rice on Thursday of last week. He ate it with no problem and then Saturday he started almost like coughing.. like he was trying to cough something up, but nothing comes out. He still has been drinking water and even played with the neighbors dog. Though he is still doing the half coughing thing. Last night he didn't seem interested in his food (he's not super food motivated to begin with) so I made him chicken and rice for dinner, todays breakfast and will make more for dinner tonight. He eats that all up.

Part of me thinks it's his food (and another reason I was researching food the other day). we're going to get Canidae tonight since they were closed yesterday. Should I just try feeding him the new food and see how he does? Or find a new vet and see if they can see him ASAP? (We normally see the vet on base for check ups and such, but it's a 3+ week wait so we would have to find one out in town.) H can't leave work since he's in training for two weeks and I just left early Friday and hate to ask the boss again, but obviously if it came to that I would.

Oh and when he was a puppy and we tried changing his food this was one of his 'allergic reactions' (is what his then vet said), that's why I'm kind of lost as what to do.

Re: Dog advice

  • I thought you had two dogs? Wasn't the other a German Shepard? Are you feeding them the same foods?

  • We did for a little bit, but we had to give her back. Her and Bentley didn't get along and she absolutely hated H. Bit both of them pretty bad a couple times. We also didn't educate ourselves as much as we should have on the GSD as a breed and that obviously was completely our own fault. We're a one dog family for now and will more than likely be for long time..

  • Ah. Ok. Have you thought about feeding Bentley raw? I'd talk to Ojo, I'm pretty sure her dogs have some allergy issues as well and it seems to help them.

  • Simon and Darcy both do this. Darcy has scaring from being debarked so her's is generally related to that. Simon does it a lot in the spring and summer and we relate it to his sensitivity to grass. I might just switch and see what happens, and then in a day or two if the coughing doesn't stop then I might go to the vet. GL!

  • As long as your dog is eating at all I probably wouldn't go to a vet. I would stop feeding him that food though.  Personally I would go find a small bag of the food he usually eats, and get the new brand that you want, and slowly make the transition.

  • Ok, is he coughing or reverse sneezing? Just remember dogs can have environmental allergies as well. Both my dogs are sneezing and reverse sneezing right now due to the pear pollen in the air. A nom-food motivated dog can refuse food for no reason. I wouldn't worry as long as he's eating something. Just mix some kibble in the rice and chicken.

  • Does he eat really fast? Both my dogs are REALLY food motivated so they inhale their food. Sometimes it causes Pongo to cough, and occasionally throw whole food back up. If that's the case they sell bowls that have finger like projections that slow them down b/c they have to eat around things like that. Instead we put a tennis ball in his bowl and it works just as well.

I would consider everything PPs have said, this is just my experience. Hope you figure it out!
