Tricare Prime

When DH enrolls us in DEERS, will we automatically be put into Prime or does he have to select that? Also, does it cost to enroll in it? I thought I read on their website that AD doesn't cost to enroll.

Re: Tricare Prime

  • Prime is automatic.  You have to request to be enrolled into Standard, and I think you might need to be on Prime for a certain amount of time before you can switch to Standard.  That's what I've been told by someone but haven't looked into it for myself.  There is no cost to enroll.

He will automatically get prime. Correct. But I thought b/c she's not going to be with him when he goes to BCT that she will automatically get standard, starting day 1 of his BCT and she must choose to enroll in TriCare Prime(or Prime Remote). I'm trying to find it on the website but that was always my understanding.

  • Aside from the SM, the family starts off tricare standard. You get this by enrolling into DEERS.  Once that is done you can either go to a tricare office, or print and fax/mail the paperwork for tricare prime.

Prime starts depending on when the paperwork is processed.  If its before the 20th of any give month then Prime starts on the first of the next month. Example You submit your paperwork today and prime starts April 1.   If you submit your paper work after the 20th, than it starts the following month. Example you submit your paper work on the 21st of March, so your coverage starts May 1.

This was my basic understanding of it.  While he is in BCT and AIT, they will be automatically enrolled into Standard and will have to choose to go on Prime when they get to his first duty station.  It is free to enroll.

Do we have to wait till we get to a duty station to switch to Prime? Also, in case it matters, we are no where near any type of military base or hospital.

From my understanding, you wait until you get there.  I may be wrong and welcome any corrections.

We choose to stay on Standard here because I've never been impressed with the doctors on our post.  I also have children with conditions that require a lot of referals.  I prefer to self refer instead of waiting around for someone to do it for me.  However, we will be switching back to Prime soon because MH's unit is opening a clinic just for their families.  We use the unit's surgeon and a PA.  I'll be taking advantage of that.

Ok, I'm probably wrong on that.  H was already long in before we got married, and now I only deal with couples who are already in and getting married, so I have little to no knowledge on SM's joining with dependents.

When I got the form in the mail from H while he was at BMT to be able to get my ID I went and signed up for Prime that day. He was still in BMT (maybe week 4 or 5?), so for AF you don't have to wait to be at a duty station.

  • You can switch to Prime or Prime Remote as soon as he joins.  My H joined through a college program and was AD while in college and I was on Prime Remote during that time.  We were in an area with no bases so we were assigned to civilians.  I had no complaints.

  • You do not have to wait till you get to your duty station but you do have to wait till he is in basic.(this is a protection to you and the military because you never know if something might happen and the member does not go to basic)  You will get the paperwork in the mail.   You can get prime/prime remote where you are as long as a provider is near.

OP. We *just* talked about this. I *just* told you how you can enroll even while you're still at home.
