Growing up, I was told cotton is good because it breathes, and I wear it all the time here in hot and humid FL. But as far as exercising goes, it seems to be the wrong way to go. Why? When I used to exercise in a gym, I wore cotton t-shirts and cotton capris or pants and it never bothered me. But now that I'm trying to do it outside, I want to be prepared--especially as it gets hotter and I'm not in a controlled climate. I hate spending money on workout clothes, but now I feel like I should replace a lot of what I've been using.
Any recommendations? (Please include shorts alternatives that don't ride up.) Does it matter if I wear cotton undies?

I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
Like the pp said, wicking material is better for really sweaty workouts. Nike's wicking material is called DriFit (or something similar) and other brands are sometimes called CoolMax, etc. You can find it for pretty cheap at places like Target and Kohls.
When it's cooler or I'm doing an easy workout, I often still wear cotton. I find it strange when people say you can't work out in cotton. Obviously you can and people did so successfully for many, many years. Unless you are uncomfortable and/or chafing, then wear whatever you want.
I run commando, but underwear seems like it would have chafing potential, so I'd probably try a wicking material.
