food dehydrator

Anyone have one?

Do you like it?

What do you make with it?

 Would you recommend it?

I made beef jerky in my oven last night and although fabulous, it took 10 hours to cook. Whoa.....

Thanks!

Re: food dehydrator

  • We have a Nesco American Harvest food dehydrator similar to this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-American-Harvest-FD-1018P-Dehydrator/dp/B001795P4O/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1332178548&sr=8-10

I really like it for making jerky.  It still takes about 5 hours to make a large batch (about 3 lbs. raw) of jerky, but it's one of those "set it and forget it" deals.  It was pretty good for apples, but the bananas turned out really weird.  Between us and the pup, we eat enough jerky to make it worth the $$.

ETA:  Also, homemade tastes a lot better than store bought!

  • We make jerky regularly, it is a quick, easy snack to pack in lunches!  It also uses up all of the venison that is in our freezer. (DH is an avid hunter).  I have also dehydrated strawberries and peaches.  My kids love them!  But the biggest hit so far for them has been dehydrated yogurt.  You just put the yogurt in drops on wax paper, in the dehydrator, for about 4 hours.  My kids say it's like LaffyTaffy.

There was a Nest hiccup and it posted my response twice.  I deleted the text of the copy and wrote "duplicate" just so people knew what was going on.
