S/O Of Eating Right- Your Best Tips

What are your best tips for eating better?

Mine:

Make pre-portioned bags of smoothie ingredients.  For us, after a run, a smoothie was the best thing EVER. But sometimes we would completely go overboard on the amount of stuff we put in making them huge portions and high in calories. I make packets with frozen fruit, frozen yogurt and usually ice cubes made from some juice (like cucumber) that are right around 200 calories per pack. I put them on the counter right before we leave and when we get back they are the perfect consistency  for making into smoothies with a little bit of water

Instead of ice cream sandwiches from the store I make my own, lower calorie ones for a treat on a hot day. I use 1 rectangle broken into two squares of graham cracker and put 1/4 C homemade one ingredient banana ice cream in it with a little bit of PB2 mixed in. The banana ice cream  is really only frozen banana that has been whipped in a food processor  until it looks like ice cream. It's only about 80 calories per sandwich

Re: S/O Of Eating Right- Your Best Tips

  • For me, I just have to eat as many whole, fresh foods as possible.  Anything else just slows me down and makes me crave more junk. Toward that end, I buy more fresh produce than I think I'll eat and then challenge myself to eat it all.

As much as I hate it, I also find it helpful to make a loose meal plan once a week.  I don't restrict myself to eating specific meals necessarily, but I do plan and shop so that I have at least a week's worth of healthy options for all 3 daily meals.  It takes a bit of work, but helps both the diet and the pocketbook.

  • I'm not always great at sticking to it, but I allow myself anything to eat once I've eaten my 9 servings of fruit/veg a day, and I allow myself anything to drink once I've drank my 3 liters of water a day. On the days that I'm successful, I'm usually too full to do much damage.

  • I always have healthy snacks in the car (crackers, trail mix, fruit, or granola bars) in case I get hungry when I'm out and about.  That way I don't stop and buy the first time I see because I'm ravenous.

I use a nutrition scale as much as possible.  It's really helped me understand appropriate serving sizes and cut down on white rice (my downfall).
