Saturday night/sunday am Norkie broke out in hives all over. Poor dog was trying to run away from his own skin. I gave him Benadryl and about 30 minutes later he was doing a lot better. It was 1 am so I had a hard time finding the source but yesterday I could tell he has what looks to be a bug or spider bite on his chest.
All day yesterday he was fine. We bought him a new dog bed, just incase the culprit was still hiding in his old one. Early evening as Tony was leaving, dog breaks out in hives again. We give him more Benadryl, hives go away in 30 minutes. 3 am this morning, poor guy breaks out in hives again. I catch it pretty early but he's still a mess, trying to get away from himself. Once again, they go away after Benadryl.
So do you think he's still reacting from the bite and the hives show up again after the Benadryl wears off? Or do you think it's something else?
No food changes, no treats given.
Also, I'm out of the regular Benadryl but have some of the Gell capsules of it. Is it ok to give dogs Gel capsules? I try to avoid getting babies in the car for just quick trips for one thing.
Re: Dog People
I would probably take him to the vet for a steroid injection. Duke and Sascha both get hives every now and again. We've learned that benadryl is enough to make them calm down temporarily, but they need the injection or the hives just keep coming back.
I'm not sure about the gel caps vs. the regular pills.

Vet office with dog and two newborns = not gonna happen unless it's like a major emergency.
I would think the gel capsules would be fine. It's the same ingredients, just a different form, right? I don't know for sure, I'm just thinking that if it were Herbert it wouldn't cross my mind not to just use whatever version I had on hand.
I hope Norkie feels better, and I hope you don't have to load the whole household into the car for a vet trip.

Do you have anything blooming near you that could be causing a seasonal allergy issue?
Renzo sometimes gets itchy after walking on freshly cut grass.
Hope your pup feels better soon!!!!!
eta: NEVERMIND. I see you found a bite of some type.
Sounds like an allergy from either a bug bite or shampoo or detergent used on items he is sleeping on or rubbing on. I use the same meds your trying and my dogs (yorkies) also had hives but theirs was food related. Hives dont return after the medicine wears off. It has to be coming from being reintroduced to what cause it to begin with. Where are you walking your dog? Check the plants and grasses for any potential poison plants he is rubbing against or ingesting.
Bottom line consult with your vet as hives and allergies and potential spider bites are not to be taken likely. A doberman next door got bit by a black widow and got very sick and the only waited to long to take him to the vet and he died. Don't want to scare you just don't wait if nothing you try helps or he keeps having reactions. Good lunck
