? about army wives, the show

Does this take place in real time?  Like, 5th season = 5 years?  ie, about as long as I've been married?

B/c Roxy's schtick is annoying the ever lovingshit out of me.  She doesn't know what an 0-5 is?

I mean, when we moved overseas, married for less than a year, I only recognized 3 ranks, the 2 H had while we were dating/married and the one he was pinning on next.  But, I also didn't live on base or really involve myself in anything military at that point.  Even my dumb ass was able to learn within about a month of moving.

  • I don't watch the show, but I couldn't tell you what butter bars represent what rank if my life depended on it.  I can recognize enlisted rank, but officer rank is a different world to me.

  • But you would get it if I told you O1, right?  I'm calling bs on just not knowing what o5 meant.

  • I'm pretty sure it is set as close to real time as possible.  I think Joan got pregnant the 1st or 2nd season and now her daughter looks to be around 3ish.

  • Ah, gotcha.  Yeah I would get that.  I thought you meant she sees people in uniform and couldn't tell what their rank was.

  • It was a conversation about how a concert was limited to 05s and above, and Roxy was all "what's that mean? I've only been here 5 years, I know nothing."  It's a primary part of her character, and it continues to piss me off.

  • I don't know, but Roxy is massively annoying.

  • Roxy is very annoying. She's that dumb wife we all hate lol. I think there was a small jump in between seasons I forget how long.

I agree. It's so annoying how much they dumb her down.

This. I think the show would be better without her.  I love her jean jacket that has her last name on it. SMH.

Butter bars in the AF are indeed O-1. I memorized the rank structure for AF Officers and I'm working on enlisted. But let me tell you Navy confuses the crap out of me. The have all the jazz on their cuffs/sleeves that is pretty much Chinese to me lol.

  • Oh, I don't know navy at all.  And I was even at a joint base in Japan, so I saw it often.  It all looks the same.  And now they don't even wear different color uniforms.

Even army is somewhat hard b/c it's so tiny.

  • I was only half watching last night. But I didn't take it that she didn't know what an O5 was, but it was "Why the hell is it O5 and up?"  Again I was only half watching.

I agree that Roxy is stupid, though.

I must have missed something, what's so wrong with that?

I almost died when I saw she was STILL WEARING that stupid jacket last night.

H saw my jean jacket today and was like "Hey! You're like whatsherface from Army Wives!"

I was like "Not yet. I need your nametape sewn onto it first."

Wait, she wore it in Sunday's episode? I haven't watched it yet. I just remember seeing it in a past one. Bahaha.

And you totally should sew his name tape on your jacket.

Navy is pretty much all I know.  Usually when people talk about rank in other branches I'm like a deer in headlights.  Sometimes I'll ask what the pay grade is just to understand a comparison to Navy ranks, but then I feel like a nosy beeotch asking for pay grade so I usually just don't.

  • I don't know how you wouldn't know what an O-5 is after that much time. She would have gone online at some point to find pay increases or SOMETHING and figured this stuff out.

    Photo bomb, yeah!
  • I think the writers purposely use Roxy to explain things to the audience.  Yes, an Army wife would likely know what an O5 is, but someone watching the show with little or no knowledge of the military would not. I think they keep her "dumb" on purpose to have a way to explain things to the audience.
