ran outside for the 1st time.

Trying to get ready for the 5K and I know outside and treadmill is completely different.

ran/walked 1.5 miles in 21 minutes with a pace of 13 average.

Re: ran outside for the 1st time.

  • That's fantastic!

I just started running outside myself and I find that I love it, especially at dusk. I was doing well on the treadmill and decided to do C25K to jumpstart running outside.

So what did you think?  easier? harder? more or less enjoyable?  For the longest time I preferred treadmill running. something about just zoning out on the mill was nice. but now I can't stand it.  I feel so trapped at one speed and I like being able to speed up or down or just... see things outside.

Great job and I hope you enjoyed it!

  • All kinds of new things for you recently, huh, frosh?  That's awesome!  I like your pace.  I, too, was "built for comfort, not for speed," as I read on a blog today.

I've never really done the treadmill thing, so I guess I don't have much of a point of comparison, but I enjoy running outside.  When I'm in my neighborhood, I feel like it gives me a better connection to my neighbors (like the guy who lives on the street behind me, who smokes cigars in his garage and never fails to wave, but I don't know his name!).  When I run out in the community, like at the trails at the YMCA or at local parks, I like to take inspiration from the other runners.

I don't know if you've found this to be true with the treadmill (if you're at the gym, I'm guessing you are??), but I think runners are the most positive, supportive group of people I've ever had the pleasure of interacting with.  I hope you'll find support from the running community, as I have.

For example, a few weeks ago, when I was nearing the end of C25K, a woman in my neighborhood yelled out that she sees me running often and to "keep up the good work," as I was "doing great!" Or at the park other runners will routinely wave or smile as they pass me.  It's very encouraging and part of the reason I love working out outdoors.

Umm... it was harder because my apartment complex is on rolling hills. So there was a lot of hills.

I didnt do the treadmill for long. I didnt want to get used to it since races are outside. My neighbors just stare at me :(

I feel like the runners on here are very supportive
