Military Wife vs. Military Girlfriend

Re: Military Wife vs. Military Girlfriend

  • I don't think it's funny, I think it's sanctimonious.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • I laughed so hard. (oh, wait, I forgot that sarcasm doesn't translate through the internets.)

It doesn't matter what your relation to the SM is, it still sucks when they are gone.  Some people just handle it better than others.

  • Eh, I think parts of it are funny because they actually do happen.  Like the beebee spouses in our command who can't make a single post on FB without saying how much they miss their H or how hard it is with him gone.  And I know there are wives out there who actually share that same opinion and feeling as that spouse, so I'm sure that conversation has happened more than a few times which is funny because it's stupid.  But the overall video or whatever it is is just dumb.

But that's a beebee military wife, not a gf. I was a gf for 2.5 years, a FI for 7 months, and have been a spouse for 7 months. GF does not automatically equal beebee, and that's really why the video annoys me. I see the attitude all the time IRL, and it annoys me to no end. We were all "just" SOs at one point.

Also, I'll judge that stuff, but I would never say it to a spouse in H's unit. A) I'm not part of the clique of wives, so I couldn't be all the other wives and I have been talking...because I only have one spouse friend, and B) IRL, I don't think it's cool to BE the sanctimonious group. I judge beebees, sure, and I don't go out of my way to befriend them, but I also wouldn't ostracize them. I was ostracized as a FI, at a funeral no less, by a group of the wives in H's shop.

And in that vein, OP, my intention was not to make you feel unwelcome here. If I did, I apologize.

Agreed. Especially the last part! Nothing against you, OP, but that was just weird.

  • Did anyone read the pissing match in the comments?

    "Deployed service members all cheat!"

"Nuh uh, all their wives at home cheat!"

  • OJO, you mean they don't? Anyway, we had a friend in 29 who I couldn't stand because she was really over-critical of new GF's and wives to their face. It bugged the crap out of me when she would be all "boot wife, boot wife" (that was her word for it). I felt like she invited these girls in to her home just to make fun of them sometimes so stuff along those lines just bothers me now. I also take after my mother and have a very limited sense of humor so don't take it personally that I did not see the general humor either.

I started reading a few of them and had to just get off the page.  That crap drives me insane.  Clearly they didn't know that when you get married in the military you sign a contract saying that the marriage is a joke and both parties HAVE to cheat during deployment.

And Stanny I think it's complete BS what happened to you.  I was thinking of just that scenario in the clip, with that couple dating a couple weeks and being all over FB and super dramatic.  But like I said the overall sentiment of the video is just dumb, and it's dumb that there really are spouses out there who think they are allowed to judge who has it the hardest.

From my experience these are the same spouses who have the "toughest job in the military" bumper stickers though, so there's that.

  • wow.  I was thinking how bad could it really be?

And then I watched.  It's bad.  Sanctimonious barely begins to describe it.

Yeah, it sucks if someone's all "boo hoo, it's been 3 days, what am I going to do with myself" but it sucks more to have the pissing contest about who has it worst.  Like, I can't miss H if he hasn't missed my child's birth?  How many anniversaries does he have to miss before I can have cred?

  • I didn't find that funny at all.  There is a way it could have been funny.  For instance if they had used the chick I know who met a guy online who is deployed and is suddenly all "I miss him soooooo much!!!11  Being a GF of a deployed soldier is sooooo hard111!!!!"  She's never met him one day in her entire month of "knowing" him.  That could have been slightly funny.

    Nine.  Dating anniversaries don't count.

    I knew a girl like that...she's 20 and a year later (now) they're married.

I was just going to say the same thing.

That is how someone I know met her now-husband: online while he was deployed. I think they were together for 2 or 3 years before they finally got hitched, but she is so "Army Wife: Toughest Job in the Military!" it's frightening. Her H is ANG and is currently gone for 4 months of training, every FB status is "I miss my soldier!" or something to that effect...every.damn.day. There have been several times where she tries to get in pissing matches with me about which one of us has it worse but I never engage, which irritates her even more I think.

  • I'm late on this but was just reading some threads over here b/c TK is screwed up, again.

This is so much worse than I even thought it would be from the comments. My eyebrows almost shot off my head. I'm going through some of that now because I'm the FI, not the wife, so I've volunteered for a couple of things and wanted to get involved and I was basically told "we'd prefer not to have you until you're married." FI is TDY right now, and I'd love to be able to get more information about events on base, but I feel pretty stonewalled. I also know that I'm lucky in a lot of ways, but that doesn't make some things suck less.

  • I dated my H for 2.5 years, was engaged for 10 months, and we have been married for over a year. DH has been with his company for almost 2 years and no wives talk to me except for one SGT's wife who is ostracized by other wives too. I'm also the only O wife in the company because all of the other Os are single, which I'm sure doesn't help. I despise the company clique of wives. I've tried smiling and being inviting but I still feel like a leper. I don't know why anyone automatically thinks they're better than anyone else, especially just for being married or being married longer. Vent over.
