Talk to me about unpacking

As of right now our movers are scheduled to unpack all of our stuff. In theory, with two under two,  this sounds fantastic, but what exactly is going to happen?

Do they just empty everything out so its spread out covering every inch of my counters and house?

Do they put stuff away?

I don't want crap just scattered all through the house and I also am skeeved out by someone putting my stuff away...and how would I know if something was missing?

I hate that I think of these things days before it's about to happen.

  • I have no idea what they do but I have way too many control freak issues to allow that to happen. I hope it helps you though.

Are you going to be getting to the house in a good amount of time before the movers? I might suggest going through the house and putting sticky notes on doors and such like DD1 room, DD2 room, and so on. As far as your kitchen you might want to have a list of where you would like things to go so you don't end up rearranging your kitchen after they leave.

  • My first thought was "may god have mercy on your soul". But really, I let them "unpack" a few things like putting our kitchen table back together, assembling our bed, arranging the living room furniture, and that's about it. I wanted to unpack everything myself. But, they did put every piece of furniture exactly where I wanted it. I think it would be weird for them to unpack clothes, dishes, knickknack, and whatnot.

  • They unpack the boxes and pile stuff.  At least in my experience.  My house in Japan was big enough to spread out piles.  Here in Hawaii I pretty much had to go through each box and put it away properly b/c there was no room for piles.

I try to get as much stuff out of the boxes while they're here so that they can take the trash with them.  One of our (4!) movers in our Hawaii move did come back to get the broken down boxes when I called them, so that was nice.

  • I have never known them to actually unpack the boxes, even though that's what they are technically supposed to do.  All I've ever seen them do is put back together anything they had to take apart.

I wouldn't want them to actually unpack though.  I like taking my time and figuring out where I want to put things.  I absolutely hate unpacking, but I think it would be possible to hate it even more if I didn't have control over where things went.

See, this is what I would like.

"Hey JoeSchmoe please put my ginormous bed together over here, assemble the table over there, put the couches here, cribs there and there. Now go."

I'm a huge control freak especially when it comes to my kitchen so maybe I'll just tell them to just do the furniture. I really do not want them unpacking everything.

Ugh. This is going to suck. I would like to just fast forward through all of the suckiness.

  • Regardless of if they unpack any of the boxes, they are supposed to reassemble any furniture that was taken apart for shipping.

But, yeah, when they unpack, they just remove item from box, remove paper from item, set down somewhere.  They don't put anything away, they don't do anything in any particular order, it's done as quickly as they can.

Generally, it's just not worth it to have them do an unpack.  I definitely make sure they reassemble furniture and place it all where I want it.

    Yes

Thanks. This all makes me feel a lot better. Well, less crazy at least :)

I'll be in our new house an entire day before they get there so I'll just make sure to label the rooms accordingly and have an idea of how I want the furniture laid out.

  • We just PCS'd and I was told that they had to offer to unpack after putting all our furniture together.  They said once it was out of the box, I was allowed to have them place it in one place, but they can't move it after that.  We just had them do the furniture, but they won't come back for our boxes now.

Oh, yeah - definitely decide which room will receive what boxes.  When they packed up your last place, they should have labelled each box with the room who's contents are contained inside it.  So, figure out the corresponding rooms at the new place. (for example, we have an office and a craft room, so I had to pick between the spare rooms at this place so I could tell them where to put the boxes)  When the truck first shows up for the unload, you can do a walk-thru with the movers to let them know which room is which.  I will admit to actually putting labels on the doors on a couple moves, but usually that is more than is neccessary.

  • Oh, and packing material seems to vary based on location/mover/something I haven't figured out yet.

For three of our moves, the movers were required to make one single pickup of packing materials.  The boxes needed to be collapsed down, and the paper shoved into a few boxes that were not collapsed.  They only would come by once, so generally I waited to have this done until after most of the place was unpacked.  On one move, the same company we had moved with was moving in one of our neighbours, and I was able to call their company and have them swing down to my place (next door), and pick up the boxes and paper while they were in the area.  Worked pretty well, and saved them an extra trip.

This most recent move, though, I asked about materials pickup, and they looked utterly confused, and said that wasn't part of what they were required to provide.  :(  Thankfully, we moved to a place less than 2 miles from a major recycling center, so it wasn't horrendously inconvenient to take the boxes and paper over there.
