Well that's interesting...

I just went to check my online dating gmail acct (read: the acct that protects me from stalkers Wink), and I noticed there was an ad on the top row, telling me to "stop stressing - call our bankruptcy lawyers now for help!".

Now, I know I'm struggling right now, what with the unemployment and all, but I'm nowhere near close to filing for bankruptcy, so I was confused. Then I noticed the "why this ad?" button on the side. Intrigued, I clicked on it and learned that google had shown me that ad based on messages in my inbox.

The only messages in that inbox are notifications from online dating sites.

Is there a reason google thinks that people on online dating sites are more likely to need bankruptcy help???

  • Oh dear, haha! That's odd

  • Google ties together info from all the sites that they own, so it bases your Gmail ads on what you google, what you watch on Youtube, what your emails say, etc., unless you specifically opt not to have them track that, in which case, it will be based only on what's in your emails (theoretically).
