Vacation in May---new clothes?

DH and I are going to Gatlinburg, TN and staying in a cabin in the mountains. I want to get a few new outfits to take with but don't want to spend a lot either. Where would you recommend shopping? I have trouble getting shorts/pants to fit me -- -my thighs are very large. I need a  12 to fit them, but my waist is closer to an 8. I wear the Cassidy Fit at The Limited in a size 10 and it fits me pretty well, but I would like to have other places to shop. That is where I mostly get my work clothes (suits.)

Any suggestions? I am 26 years old, trying to get out of "cutesy" t-shirts like the zillion that I own from Rue 21.

I am also vertically challenged. 5'1/165#

  • I have no full body shots of myself, and DH's arm is in half of the pic of this one but its the best I have to show you how i carry my weight.

  • I would get some nicer shorts (just not super cheap ones anyway) and have them altered to fit you. Sound like you would just need them taken in at the waist, which shouldn't be a big deal to do. Poorly fitting clothes, especially shorts, don't look good on anybody.

I don't wear shorts much myself. I find that they bunch up at the thigh and often they just aren't flattering. I prefer dresses or capri/crops. So that's my second suggestion.

  • I live near Gatlinburg (Knoxville) and it's not super fashionable around here by any means. I'd just wear whatever you're comfortable in. If you drive into Pigeon Forge or the Gatlinburg "strip" area people are generally wearing just jeans and tshirts or tank tops. That area is very touristy so there's a lot of tennis shoes and what not. It's also the "tourist" place for a lot of the locals so you'll see a lot of like Carhart boots & camo (seriously).

For May I'd probably just wear jeans and some cute tank tops with flat sandals (I'd bring a cardigan b/c I'm always cold). If I were to hike I'd just wear tennis shoes with shorts or capris (on the trails - I'm not much of a hiker....more of a walker).

By the way if you're doing any "adventures" the white water rafting here is great and the ziplining is beautiful.

It's been really warm here lately, so I'd expect May to be warmer than it normally is - check the weather before you head out for sure!

  • Oh, and for store recs - I am 29 and I like to shop at BR, Jcrew, Gap, etc. I also still shop at American Eagle (and probably always will) and sometimes Loft. Online I shop a lot via Piperlime. HTH!

  • Before DS I was an hourglass (still am, but now there's a little more around that glass:) and had a big discrepancy between chest/waist/hips. I honestly recommend getting your clothes tailored. I know it can be hard to find someone at first and the extra expense is lousy, but it will make such a difference in how your clothes fit.

If you find some pants/shirts you like, keep the tage on them and bring them to the tailor (or seamstress) and see what they would need to do to make them work. Just nipping in the waist in a flat front pant/short is a pretty easy and fairly inexpensive task.

I have not bought clothes in forever-like 2 years ago before I was pg (hence my hanging out on this board so I can pick up on a few trends), but I would buy a lot of pants at banana republic and khaki's at gap. Banana has free tailoring for luxe members.

For jeans I wear citizens or AG's and get them at Nordstroms (and they do free tailoring for their jeans as well) if you're in the market for a nicer pair of jeans. GL-its not easy to buy off the rack, but tailoring really makes a difference.

  • First of all, DH and I did a cabin rental in Gatlinburg a few years ago and loved it! Like Karebear said, it's definitely not the type of place that you need to dress up for. We wore super casual hiking type clothes during the day, and I pretty much wore jeans or a sundress at night.

As for where to shop, I would agree that you might need to suck it up and get some of your bottoms tailored. It will be worth it to have clothes that fit you perfectly -- especially if you're getting higher quality items that will last you a long time.

Banana and Gap have always been my go-tos, but J.Crew is great for shorts and pants. And if you have a Nordstrom near you, I'd consider working with one of their personal shoppers. It's free and there's no requirement to spend a certain amount, but they should be able to help identify brands and styles that fit your body.

  • When I really want to find something flattering for a wedding, or special occasion I go to White House Black Market. Their stuff is usually more than I like to spend, but they're the most flattering clothes I can find and the material just feels so good to wear. I bought a long maxi skirt there last year that I will get lots of use out of.I have realized that dresses just don't look good on my body, so I like skirts and tops. Plus I love that the workers are super helpful and can pick out items based on my body. I usually end up having to choose what I'm going to buy, because there are several items I love. Have a fun vacation!

  • I really like the way that American Eagle's boyfriend jeans fit, aside from the fact that they are low rise. I can't do low rise, ALL of my panties stick out of the back.
