I need advice re:eating/losing weight

Ok, so here's the situation:I am 5'3'', weigh 141 pounds. I wouldn't say I'm fat at all, but I'm not skinny either. Kind of middle of the road. I have Diabetes, so I'm on a restrictive carb/sugar diet as is, although I don't always do SOOO great with that.I have already lost 15 pounds since July 2010, and that was just through changing my diet.I have now started working out (I have been running for 4 weeks, started running 1 mile a day for a week, then 2 miles a day for a week, now I'm at 3 miles a day. I run 3 miles in 36 min.), and have set some serious fitness goals for myself. I would like to lose 15-20 more pounds by the end of August.I have joined my fitness pal, and they said i need to eat 1200 calories a day to lose weight, another site said 1700. I seriously can not eat that much food. Yesterday I felt like I ate SOOOO much, I was very full after every meal, and I still only ate about 1000 calories. Some days I do eat more, closer to the 1200 mark, but some days I'm closer to 800 calories, and I feel like my body has hit a plateau, and I'm stuck at this weight...I don't know what to do, and I was hoping that you might have some insight. TIA!

Re: I need advice re:eating/losing weight

  • Can you post a typical menu for your day? We can help make some suggestions/swaps.

  • 800 calories is not enough, especially with as active a lifestyle as yours.

One of the easier ways people around here have talked about upping calories is switching things like nonfat yogurt for 2%.

I agree that a sample daily menu would help.  There might be some easy swaps in there.

  • Like PP's, I need to see a sample menu. I aim to get between 1200 and 1500 calories most days. I eat clean, stick to lean protein and fiber dense carbs. They days that I only eat 1200 calories, I'm definitely still hungry, I would be famished only eating 800. And this is not a flame, I am honestly curious as to what you are eating that you can be full on so few calories.

  • Here's what I ate yesterday:

pretzels and peanut butter for breakfast

left over steak, carrots and mac n cheese for lunch ( using a special pasta for diabetics)

pasta with chicken and broccoli and 3 mozzarella sticks for dinner (again, with the special pasta)

yesterday wasn't an ideal eating day for me, but i did eat lots of BROCCOLI with dinner, not just mixed into the pasta, and the special pasta converts into only 5 carbs per serving, and i would say i ate a total of 2 servings yesterday, b/c i probably had 1.5 at dinner, and only half at lunch, bc it was left overs, and we didn't have a ton of it left.

Today my breakfast was an apple,

for lunch I brought a wheat bread sandwich with Turkey, Spinach, Lettuce, Green peppers, onion and light mayo and a banana and a string cheese.

I have no idea what I'll have for dinner.

Sorry about the weird font, i posted this on another message board and copied and pasted from there

the general consensus there is that I'm not getting enough protein, and that my breakfast sucks.

But i have almost an hour commute in the morning and have to be AT work at 7:20 so i can't get up ANY earlier than i already do, hence the snacks for breakfast pretty much.

  • Hi sakelp!  I am your height, and my highest weight is 138 (11 years ago).  I was 136 this past October when I started a "boot camp."  I was already eating OK (probs too much, but not terrible stuff), and was running a LOT (like 30+ miles a week).

Boot camp helped me shake things up a bit.  Plenty of strength training, some high intensity cardio, and lunges.  So many lunges.

I am finishing up my fifth session now.  It's been really great for me.  I've lost a lot of body fat, though not tons of pounds.  My size 4 work pants are so loose on me now; I have to wear a belt!  And forget the size 6 ones...they look like clown pants.

I eat at least 1800 calories a day.  Of course, I'm boot camping 5 mornings a week for an hour, and also running 6 days a week at a decent pace, at least 5 miles a day.  I will feel so so so hungry without at least 1800 calories.

It would be great if you'd post what you're eating so we can see how you could tweak things.

Do you take the pups running with you?  Cal is the reason I started running.  I was a cyclist until Cal came along.  Then I needed to get him so much exercise that running became my thing.  He absolutely adores it, and I really think he thinks it's his job.  He takes it very seriously!

Katie!!! i miss you! i don't see you around much anymore!

No, I'm terrible at running outside, so i go to the gym. Poor doby... i always say i should sneak him in and put him on the treadmill next to me. lol

i posted above my food for yesterday and today, i'll pm you or post on here about my food for the next couple of days if you want.

the other board says they think I'm severely underestimating the calories I'm eating, but I'm just going by what my fitness pal says, and i guess maybe they're not correct on that site? i don't really know. they also say that i shouldn't go by the calories the machine says I burn  ... which is what i was doing... so i'll stop doing that.

I just joined a better gym than I was previously going to, and they have a pool, and classes, so I think I'm going to start swimming one day a week, and probably lifting weights more than i have been, as well as taking another class sometimes... i didn't see a boot camp, but I'll check.

Thanks for the suggestions! hope you,h, cal and nite are all doing well!

I agree. The machines at the gym can be off by a lot. Also, do you use a food scale? If not, you could be eating a lot more or less than you think you are.

I do use a food scale/measuring cup for most things

  • Dude...you're not getting like any protein.

I am up at 4:30 in the morning for boot camp.  I keep food at work so I can eat breakfast at my desk.  This morning I had a Chobani yogurt (the new blood orange flavor...omg delicious), a banana, and string cheese.  Lunch is a spinach/strawberry/walnut salad and homemade Thai peanut noodles with tofu and broccoli.

I think my breakfast alone had more protein than your entire day yesterday.  You need it to build and maintain muscle.  An obvious source is meat, but you can find it in other places too: eggs, yogurt, cheese, beans, legumes, tofu, tempeh, veggie burgers (Boca black bean burgers are so tasty), etc.  We always have hard boiled eggs in the fridge, along with yogurt, cheese, and veggie lunch meat.

I think more protein/food in general, and some strength training could really help you.  A boot camp that is focused on strength training could whip you into shape quickly and teach you things you can continue to do on your own afterward.  I did 24 workouts in 30 days at my first boot camp and lost 7 pounds and 2% body fat.  It was an amazing motivator.  I looked and felt so different.

Good luck...someday Doby will go with you and it will be so awesome!  I absolutely love having Cal with me on runs.  It's our special time, and I love being able to do it for/with him.  Plus, he never stops, so I can never stop :)

  • Are you sure you only ate 1000 calories yesterday?  This looks like more than that to me:

    imagesakelp:

    Here's what I ate yesterday:

pretzels 120 and peanut butter for breakfast 180 - not sure how much

left over steak, 200 carrots  55 and mac n cheese for lunch ( using a special pasta for diabetics) 200 - 400

pasta 200 -300 with chicken 200 and broccoli 25 and 3 mozzarella sticks (fried? or just string cheese?? 180 -  300) for dinner (again, with the special pasta)

yesterday wasn't an ideal eating day for me, but i did eat lots of BROCCOLI with dinner, not just mixed into the pasta, and the special pasta converts into only 5 carbs per serving, and i would say i ate a total of 2 servings yesterday, b/c i probably had 1.5 at dinner, and only half at lunch, bc it was left overs, and we didn't have a ton of it left.

As far as breakfasts with protein I make breakfast ahead of time and freeze it. Right now my go to breakfasts are protein pancakes and eggs with veggies in muffin tins that I freeze.

    http://alifetobraggabout.blogspot.com/2011/01/perfect-protein-pancake.html

What about adding almond butter to your apple at breakfast?  I also might try and limit your pasta consumption, even if it is low carb pasta.

  • Are you having absolutely tiny portions of the items you posted (steak, macaroni & cheese, peanut butter, etc)? Otherwise, I can't imagine how your eating was under 1000 calories.

And, ditto the PPs about protein.

ETA - for example, are you talking about a string cheese, or a mozzarella stick that you can buy at a bar with marinara sauce? Even baked (not fried), from what I can find online, those have 80-100 calories/each.

  • Like the PP mentioned I too think you are underestimating your calorie intake for the day. Be careful on MFP sometimes the info entered is not correct. Check packaging and pick the item that most closely matches the correct amount.. or enter it yourself.
