bali, indonesia?

my husbands family is from indo--and it's time for him to go back to visit family, and my first time there to introduce me, and our baby.

before him, i didn't know much about indonesia other than simple things and that bali is a popular, beautiful, tropical destination--but i don't know much about bali, either.

we're planning our trip there now, and i said i want to stop by bali, just to say we've been (his family is from the other islands)... we're watching lots of travel channel documentaries on indo, and bali is actually really dirty, and not nearly as beautiful as i imagined (okay fine, i've never really taken the time to google it).

have you or anyone you know been to bali?  is it "worth" it time-wise? (cost isn't the issue).

thanks!

    Fifth Anniversary

We just got back from two weeks in Bali.  I had a lovely time and would put it in my top 10 of destinations I have travelled to.

We stayed half the time at the Four Seasons Sayan outside of Ubud.  It was an amazing resort and the town of Ubud is wonderful.  There were plenty of sightseeing things to do along with just relaxing by the river.  The other time was at the beach at the Conrad.  I wasn't as impressed with this part of the island.  It was more touristy and not as interesting.  The hotel was lovely and the beach was nice.  I will be back to Bali, I really loved it.  The people we encountered were so wonderful, which always makes a trip for me.

I didn't find it any dirtier than any other third world country. Let me know if you have any questions.

    So Tasty, So Yummy
  • I have been to Bali about 9 times as an adult and we went once or twice a year as child (it is only a short and cheap trip from here). I really hate when anyone posts stuff like "it's really dirty" about any place especially if they have never been there.

It is an improverished country and like all impoverish countries doesn't have western infrastructure- this doesn't mean it is dirty just a different way of living.

If you have this idea about Bali (which is fairly westernised in the tourist areas) I fear you might not want to visit the other islands where you husbands family is from because it might be too dirty for you.

Bali is a wonderful place. The people are extremely friendly. The food is wonderful and there are lots of great beaches and cultural sites to visit. You can also find every level of hotel there (from luxury to backpackers). Personally I wouldn't stay in the Kuta area and I would choose when you go (October/November are a bad time as that is when Australian Schoolies hit the area- think spring break and a lot of Australian sports club have their end of year boys trip there).

    Good luck and enjoy yourself.

  • My husband grew up in Indonesia (on Java) and they went to Bali at least twice a year. I have been fortunate enough to visit Indonesia twice and both times included trips to Bali.

They stay up on the north coast, in a more secluded and private resort that I think is just heavenly. It's peaceful and gorgeous.

I don't care much for Kuta Beach and all the hawkers/tourists, but that is just personal style. I know there are some very nice large hotels in that area as well.  I did enjoy the Ubud area, exploring the artist shops and the monkey forest.

  • We went on our honeymoon and didn't find it to be dirty at all.  Like others, we also enjoyed the Ubud area.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • thanks for the tips ladies. i will be sure we book at ubud (sorry on my phone, dont remember spelling) and avoid the k -place, if possible.

as for it being "dirty" i meant that it just wasn't the white-sandy-beach look. i'm not afraid of going into town and eating street-food, etc, i just thought the beaches were supposed to be prettier.

fwiw, my h has family on the island of belitung, and the pictures there are amazing, and of white-sandy-beaches, so for the frequent indo travelers, maybe check out that island if you're in the area.
