Fashion Help!

I am going to be starting a new job at a Museum as the Cultural Anthropologist Assistant. The museum said to dress business casual/semi casual.

Should I wear darker clothes since it's a museum or should I stick to my usual darker on the bottom and lighter on the top? I plan on wearing pencil skirts, dress pants, button ups, business dresses, heels and the like- just what colors should I plan on buying?

Thanks!

Re: Fashion Help!

  • I don't think the colors matter if they weren't specified -- as long as the pieces you're choosing look professional.

I also wouldn't go crazy shopping until you've been there for at least a week and can get a better idea of what others in similar positions are wearing. To me biz cas/semi cas sounds like you may not need to go as dressy as you're describing. In my office business casual can definitely mean cropped pants, a cute top and flats. There's a wide range with descriptions like that.

  • Your outfits sounds fine.  I agree with pp, wait for a few weeks before you add more items to your wardrobe.

I think since you work at the musuem, if you choose to go with more monochrome outfits, you can add some artsy avant garde (not crafty) accessories.

ETA: Congrats!!! What an exciting new job!!

  • Ditto pps.

If you're antsy to shop or now is the only time you'll have to really look around then maybe just keep your eye on some pieces you like and can buy later or buy and keep the tags/don't wear for a while.

As pp said, you may find you'll want to dress down even more so I wouldn't spend money until I know the feel for everyone else.
