Anyone bike? Come on in here...

Chris and I have been thinking about getting us some bikes, but you're talking to a chica who hasn't ridden one since middle school.  We went to our local bike shop last night just to get a idea of what's out there, but we were only there for 20 minutes because they were closing up.  I think we're looking into dual sport hybrids, but that's as much as I know.  Any suggestions, referrals, tips etc would be greatly appreciated because I have NO idea what's out there now. TIA!

  • I have really gotten into it the last few years. I think you were right to go to a bike shop. Maybe next time you can have more time there. What do you see yourself doing? Mostly bike trails? Mtn biking? Do you want to get into road biking? I think a hybrid may be a good place to start. You can always put road tires on it. I think a big thing is making sure it fits right. Also, have them give you a tutorial on the gears. This made a huge difference. I have really enjoyed biking. I like it a lot better than running. It is easier to bring water/snacks with you, you can coast sometimes, and cover large distances. I would start out doing 5 -10 miles, and gradually increase. I started doing our bike trail because I was afraid of riding on the street. I added miles each week, and now I do 20 to 30 mile rides in nice weather. Also, padded bike shorts are your friend. Even if you look dorky.

  • I have a Trek Hybrid.  It can be used on trails and the road.  It's a bit on the expensive side (I think I paid close to $400), but it is such a great bike.

This is similar to what I have..

That's good to know, especially since the Treks were thes ones we were looking at last night!

  • I have an older version of this and I like it. It's a hybrid, but Giant calls them comfort bikes. MH has a road bike, and we used to ride the trails together. I like it a lot. I feel more stable on it than on his road bike.
